Skylight replacement
« on: July 08, 2017, 08:19:27 PM »
I had the unfortunate experience of sitting thru a bad hailstorm in the motor home while in Dumas Texas this week. It knocked out all the vents and skylight over the shower plus other plastic. The paint appears to have survived. I am looking at replacement parts. The available shower skylights say they fit a 22 x 22 inch hole. Mine appears to be at least 23x23. Did they change the standard size since 2002?  How about the vent size? Has it changed?  Mine may be 14x14. Maybe I can just replace the vent covers.

That self leveling sealer looks like a big problem getting it cleaned off. What kind of a tool do the experts use?

I replaced mind using a Dremel Multi-Max tool with a chisel attachment. The Dicor adhesive came right off had the the sky-lite off and roof cleaned  in 15 minutes.

Al,
About 5 or 6 years ago, I was hit by a hail storm at 2 am when I was in Dumas. Now back to your problem. Your coach came with Fantastic Fans, and the vent covers on them have a lifetime warranty against breakage. So all you need to do is call Fantastic Fan and tell them that your vent covers are broken and they will send you new ones free of charge. However, since they were purchased by Atwood, you are now required to pay the shipping charges for the new covers.

The sealer is not too hard to remove, just use a sharp gasket scraper and reseal the screws on the new vent covers with a good flow grade sealer. The shower skylight will be a lot more work to clean the sealer, but it is doable, so take you time. BCS (Beaver Coach Sales) should have a new skylight to fit your shower in stock.

When my coach got "hailed",  I also had most of my top clearance lights cracked. Mine are not fully recessed. Suggest you really check them out as well. Water leaks there are extremely difficult to find.

Al,
I got a skylight from BCS this past August for our '01 Patriot.  Description on invoice reads Skylight 24x24 1994-2003 (Mont/Pat/Contss); Part Number FD3-2424B2IB-6.  Also required a special box to ship.

Skylight             $161.00
Box Skylite         $ 25.00
Special handling  $ 21.62
Total                  $207.62

Don't know where the time goes.  Still have not installed it!  :-[  With the coach in for repairs at various places I have had minimal access to the coach.  Hopefully in the Fall once the temperatures begin to drop I will be able to replace it.  When we replace the skylight we plan to replace the interior wood exposed to the moisture in the shower stall as previous owner(s) has allowed permanent water stains.  Perhaps the stains are unavoidable?

I would be interested if others have replaced the wood and if so with what material?

Good luck to you!

Paul,
In my current coach, the area between the shower skylight and the molding at ceiling level is lined with sections of Corian that match the shower. It looks good and is not affected by moisture.
