Hurricane heater issues.
« on: January 07, 2018, 01:28:25 AM »
I finally had my hurricane heater hooked up to the new digital thermostats by Kiss my RV in Peoria AZ. On the first trip out, everything worked fine for the first day. On day two, it started having issues. It would start for about 4-5 seconds and then flame out. It showed an ignition flameout fault code. After returning home, I pulled the nozzle out and it was dirty. I cleaned it with brake cleaner and removed a lot of black crud out of the nozzle. I reinstalled it and it fired right up and ran normally. One week later we took out the coach on another trip and when I turned the unit on, the green light on the control panel inside the coach failed to come on. After cycling it on and off several times, it finally came on and the unit came on normally. After an hour, I heard a clicking sound coming from the module in the forward air conditioning area and also on the control panel by the hurricane heater. The heater shut down and would not relight but there are no fault codes showing. The only lights on are the power on and pump on lights on the heater control panel. After switching off the system for ten minutes and cycling the switch on and off several times, it will operate for two or three cycles then shutdown again but with no fault codes.  Should I try to see if it will run normally in the bypass mode when I get home? What would cause the green light on the control panel inside the coach fail to come on when it is switched on? Any help would be appreciated. 1999 Patriot Thunder 425. Cat C12 with Allison 4000 series transmission.

I had mine cutting out once in while, turned out to be the wire  from the thermostat where it plugs into the control panel in the hurricane bay.
It’s a flat Phone cable that plugs into side of the control panel, on mine the cable is just long enough to plug in

Ease check hope it helps

Thanks Harry. I’m going to check all the connections when we get back home.

Paul,
There are several things that could be causing your issue, but before you start throwing parts at it, I would contact ITR (the manufacturer) for a little troubleshooting help.

It sounds like a control wire, thermostat, or control board issue, but a through diagnosis of the system should be ran before you start with the usual RV repair shop method of throwing expensive parts at it until it works. The Hurricane heater is a simple system that is much easier to maintain than a Aqua Hot unit, but it can be a little bit difficult to diagnose at times.

Those are great tools if you have a fault code but I’m not getting a fault currently. I’m going to check connections and try it again. I’ve got to check the manual again but should the green light come on ( the switch panel inside the coach) as soon as you turn it on or does it only come on when the thermostat cycles the system on?

Paul,
Green light should be on any time the remote panel at the Hurricane is on. This might be of help in case you don't have a copy.

It turned out to be a poor connection at the control panel in the coach. As soon as I pulled the control switch and cleaned the telephone style connector, it fired up normally and quit clicking. I talked to the guys at ITR and they were a big help as was all the advice from everyone on the forum. Thanks!
