Is there a market for my old tires?
« on: April 08, 2018, 02:43:49 PM »
We have 6 Yokohama 104 ZR 295/80/22.5 tires on our Beaver, and have to replace them before August of this year. I'm planning to get the same tires again, and wonder if there is a market for my current tires. The shop I'm getting the tires from will not give me any trade allowance for them, even though they show super tread, have no dry rot (yet) and have never leaked.

Is there a retread place that would buy them? A trailer dealer? I would think they would be good for steers on a semi.

Can someone tell me if I'm nuts, or is this viable?

Thats a great question Stan! I will be watching for the answer also. I just had the steer tires replaced and they wouldn't give me any allowance for the old ones. I have to get my rear four replaced soon also.

When I had all 6 tires replaced on my Monterey in 2014, they allowed me $50 per tire on trade in because they were under 6 years old.  I think they were just under. He told me that he had a farmer down the road that could use them on his tractor.  The tires were on the MH when I bought it used and I did not know how the previous owner had taken care of them. All the new ones I bought had the same manufacturing date of 14/14.  I will run these tires until they are 6 years old and then replace them. I have had tire problems in the past and it taught me a lesson.

I sold my 6 Goodyear G670s that were about ~9 years old with about 13k miles for $450 on CL.

I asked two tire shops for a credit on my 295/80/22.5. Both said no go, as 'its an oddball size tire'. Both said tractor trailer tires are 295/75. Don't know if that's true or not. Craigslist?

I sold mine to a company that runs dump trucks and they used them on the drop axle since the size don't matter but load range does.

When I replaced my Toyo's due to age, a local trucking company traded an oil change for my old tires.  They used them on their dump trucks.

Stan,
There is no standard answer for your question. There are many variables that go into any value calculation for used RV tires. Since most of the used truck tires go on commercial long haul trailers that almost never run 295/80 22.5 tires, that lowers their demand considerably. Also, the age of the tires will figure into their value. No commercial driver will run aged out steer tires on his tractor for the same reason that you are replacing them. However if you were running 11/R/22.5 or 295/75 22.5 tires, even though they have a lower load rating, they are in demand as trailer tires.

When I replaced the original 11/R/22.5 tires on my 2000 Marquis at 3 years of age because they were overloaded, Les Schwab in Bend gave me $150 per tire credit for them towards the new 295/80 22.5 replacements, and they had them sold and installed on a commercial trailer before I even paid my bill.

To put it simply, your aged out 295/80 tires may have some value to a very few people, but it will be rare to find a truck tire shop that will want them bad enough to pay for them.

Pete’s Road Service has several locations around So Cal. When I bought new tires for my last coach, they gave me $95 for the six Michelin 295 80R 22.5’s which we’re in excellent condition, except for the age.

They must have had something in mind for them, because I only became aware that they were giving me the $570.00 allowance on the invoice, when I was paying the bill.

Replaced 8 Michelin 12R 22.5 tires 1 1/2 years ago. Old tires were 7 years old with plenty of tread left. Put them on CL for $150.00 each. Gone in 10 days or so. There is value in older tires if you are willing to post on CL then take the time to sell them. Overall, saved $1,200.00 on purchase of new tires. Tire shops will low ball value of old tires as they need to make a profit on reselling them. For me, it was well worth it to sell them on my own.

I would only be concerned with the liability of selling dated tires to a retail end user.

The Pete’s tire store I traded them to is in Indio, CA and in fact sells a lot of tires to the surrounding farm operations.  This may explain why they found them valuable.

Just replace my Michelins 11r 22.5 with Toyos M144 295 80 22.5.  The only difference is my 295's are 1 inch wider and will carry more weight per tire so I can run lower air pressures.   Sold the old tires on CL for 1300 even though they were 7 year old tires.

Michelin Service Bulletin say that 10 years is the max on their tires, although I, and many others would never let them get that old.
