Sharp Carousel Microwave/Convection appears to have died
« on: February 10, 2019, 04:54:28 AM »
Hi All

I have a quick question, the combo microwave/convection oven appears to have died. The breaker tripped, my wife reset breaker, everything came back on but the microwave. Unplugged it and plugged fan into the outlet, fan works so breaker is okay. Does anyone know if these had an internal fuse or reset? It's the R-1820 model. If anyone has replaced this particular model what model did you replace it with to fit in the same space. It is completely dead, no fan, no lights and the hood does not work. Thanks

I googled your model and can’t find any reseller using your model number but there are links to manuals for your model. Look up the demensions in a manual then hopefully you can comparison shop. There was even a link to an old post on this site from 2011!

Microwaves typically have a fuse, and on our 1994 Sharp MW/convection at home I’ve replaced the fuse twice, and resoldered nano-cracked circuit board points that made its switching act up.  Often the convection side heats things up and over-taxes the electronics.

Unfortunately the outer case has to be removed to get at the fuse, behind the control panel, but most homecenters and hardware stores have the standard white or dark 20 amp MW fuse.  So you’ll likely have to remove the MW from its mount/cabinet.  That is best a 2-man job as most built-in MWs are heavy.  I keep a spare fuse package near the unit, so get more than one when you go to the store if it’s not in a 2-pack.

The yellow Bussman package usually says it’s for microwaves and you want the “fast acting” one.

When you are working inside the unit, use caution as capacitors in there can retain a charge even when the device is unplugged.  Labels inside should alert you to that.  The fuse is easy enough to check for continuity with the ohmmeter side of a multimeter.  Sorry I can’t be of more help as I don’t know your specific model, and to that point you should read the inscriptions on your old fuse to be double-sure you get the right ones.  It’s also remotely possible I suppose that your particular fuse may have some easier access.

Hi Joel,

Thanks for the info, something tells me you have been thinking about doing some fishing here along the coast. :)

I have the same microwave the fuse blew in mine. It has been a while. Unplug the unit. To get to the fuse remove the fan discharge cover across the top, I think it is 1 screw in the center. Then there is 1 screw that holds the control panel in place. Make sure you unplug the microwave. Work the control panel loose and look in opening. The fuse in mine was easy to see but hard to get to and I had heard that there are capacitors that will hurt you in there. I checked everything with a multimeter and worked the fuse out, it was blown and a new one was less than $2.00. Good luck hope it is just the fuse.

I had the same one too in my previous coach, 1990 Barth Regency. It also went bad so I measured it and replaced it with a new microwave bought at Lowe’s fairly cheap. Of coarse the new one did not have convection but we never used that portion anyway.

Hi Joel,

Thanks for the info, something tells me you have been thinking about doing some fishing here along the coast. :)

Not thinking, but dreaming maybe, Jason.  Crabs, razor clams...  ::). Finally off the demoic acid and regulated size lists.

Medical issues one after the other have grounded us for over 2 years.  Hopefully Lee’s back surgery Tuesday morning will relieve the painful leg disability she’s dealt with since 2017.  Primary care doctors ignored my opinions and kept insisting it was arthritic until I got them to refer to a specialist and an MRI.  She can’t now even make the first step into the coach.

Sorry, off topic a bit;  but hopefully we’ll get to the beaches once this spring.  My fly fishing tends more to the east, and may get to do that again this summer... if I can remember how.  But one of these days I would like to scratch my itch to try for Redtail Perch with a fly off the Yachats rocks;  my elder brother taught me how to do it with bait 60 years ago.  Great memories dodging breakers. ;D

Hopefully you can just do what Keith did and replace the fuse without removing the entire microwave.  Just be careful, and for heavens sake try not to stick a screwdriver or other metal tool in there... it can still be dangerous even unplugged.

we had same troubles with our Sharp on about 3 or 4 occasions and it turn out to be a blown fuse.  After replacing the fuse the MW works really good now.  At first it took me about 30 minutes to track down the location and to remove the stuff to get to the fuse, but now I can do a replacement in about 10 minutes.

Hi everybody,

Thanks for all the advice about replacing the fuse. It sounds like I don't have to remove the unit. I am not very mechanically inclined so will have appliance guy come out and show me what to do, I am a visual learner.
Thank you

Hi everybody,

The appliance guy came out and took him about 10 minutes to replace the fuse. He showed me what to do next time. He took a look at the MW and said these are built to last forever. This was by far the simplest repair we have ever done.
