Toyo M144 tires - what is the 152/148M H mean?
« on: April 22, 2019, 06:05:13 PM »
I saw Toyo M144 tires in the 295/80R22.5 size that my coach uses in Walmart ad. They are half the cost ($369 versus $735)) of the 295/80R22.5 Michelin XZA2 Energy tires I have now.

These tire are  further identified with "152/148M" "H" (H is the load rating - I'm not sure what the other numbers are for).

Is this the tire I want? Or some cheaper version of the M144 that everyone likes?

Found this by Googling...

Load index   152 (3550kg / 7830lbs)   One or two numbers which indicate the load the tire can carry in single or in single and dual operation at the speed corresponding to the associated speed category.

Dual charge rate   148 (3150kg / 6940lbs)     [????????]

Speed code   M (130km / h / 81mph)   The speed symbol is made up of a single letter or an A with one number. It indicates the maximum speed at which the tire can carry a load corresponding to its Load Index

Load range   H (16 ply)   Load range means a letter (C, D, E, etc.) used to identify a given LT size with its load classification and inflation limits. The load-carrying capacity of passenger tires is rated as either Standard Load, Light Load or Extra Load.

I do not understand what a "Dual charge rate" is, and the article did not explain what it means.

Mike,
That is a good price. I paid just under $400 each for a set of them in PA in early last year. They perform very well but have slightly stiffer sidewalls than Michelin. I noticed Hankook has some pretty good prices through FMCA but only offer 75R versions. (didn't check load carry capacity).

Tire info is always interesting. While I am not yet in need of new tires it is always something that all of a sudden (6 years life on tires) is not far ahead and which ones am I going to buy. In the Tent at Quartzsite RV show sat the Michelin dealer. Upon inquiry about new Michelins 365 and 315 sizes (70R22.5) he three times reiterated that my current sizes would be less cost than the 295 that I used to have on the Beaver. That he explained is due to the fewer of that size used in all the world of tires.
I have really never researched why so much difference in tire cost, and now with so many brands available it is even more of a potential to get tires. Always use to use the Michelins due to being anywhere in the country and a regional Distributor would always have them if there was a need when traveling across this country. The 295/80R22.5 is used on a drop deck semi trailer so that was the availability help.
In todays road conditions I would even like a softer sidewall to take up the bumps, potholes, scoured pavement (some interstates are close to going back to gravel) that is so frequently driven on. It is why I stayed with the Michelins and appears that we will stay with them from what I have gleaned form all your posts. Thank you all for the info.

Mike, I put 6 M144 on the rears up in Medford, Or at Lew Schawb last year(no tax). Don't remember what I paid but they are great tires. Les Schwab is a great service place, wish they were all over the country, I don't even have them here in Az.
