The ID tag is on the front cover.

Thanks Mike.  The only tag on the front of mine lists patent info (first picture)

Second picture is the only other number I could find.  Is that it?  Maybe I was looking for something more permanent

Adam, do you have a build sheet on the back of a cabinet door or in the closet?

No I don’t Jerry.  I think the white tag is it.  It’s the same number I found on some service docs from CAT.  I was expecting something more substantial, I guess.

Jerry, does your C12 have a serial tag like this (from my C13) on the front cover?
I'm thinking Adam's serial/ID tag peeled off or was painted over.

Do you have any previous service receipt documents?  Service entities often print both the coach and engine serial nos. on their service order/invoice.

I was looking for something like mikes picture.  Nothing like that on the engine.  Joel, the reference I found on previous service docs was the same number as the white tag pictured.  I called CAT and they were able to acces records with that number, so I guess that’s it.

Gentleman, subject engine S/N number  when in question about engine number it is
Stamped to engine block behind the engine ECM ( top rear corner ). Using engine serial number
To find build spec’s , date of build and date of test on engine. A serial number is made up for engine along with called a A/R arrangement number. and build sheet etc. Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic

Top rear corner on exhaust side or other side?  I have no idea what the ECM looks like.

Adam,
The Dave Atherton seminar wrteup has pics that show the location of the ECM. It's a "sticky" on the Technical Board.

Thanks Steve.  If it’s behind the ECM, I can’t see it.  I’ve used mirrors, borescopes, lights, all over that engine.  I don’t see a data plate anywhere.  Luckily, the white sticker in my picture is the serial number.  It was probably stuck on in production for the bar code, and stayed.

Adam, good morning I will have time today to lookup the number on that tag and just maybe it
Will be your engine S/N number. Going back to the S/N is stamped into the block behind the ECM
But the ECM 4 bolts have to be removed and ECZm loose than you will see by the top right bolt
hole on flat the number stamped into block. Been traveling to Minot and will have time this afternoon
to look up the S/N number on that tag ( note if that is a valid number it will pull up all information
and the engine Arrangement number for your engine. ) . The stamped number behind ECM is a
backup number in case all the paper tag are missing or cannot be read. Need Email address
