Title: Discharge capacitors / Replace AC reversing coil
Post by: Darrell Terry on July 02, 2020, 03:27:58 PM
Front AC starting making strange noises and producing Hot air during AC mode.
After researching issue on internet it appears AC reversing coil is the issue which I confirmed with a visual as seen in attached picture.

Question, how do you discharge the capacitors before replacing the coil ?

Turn off AC breaker to AC unit, unplug from shore power, turn off generator. Momentarily short capacitor terminals to each other using an old screwdriver, you might get a spark. No big issue, you just want to try the screwdriver trick first, so you don't wind up blowing yourself off the roof of the RV. Capacitors will self-discharge after a time, but I don't know how long that takes. Be careful up on the roof!!

After a little more thought, It can't hurt to short out the caps before working on the roof AC, but, as far as the reversing coil goes, I don't think that is part of the fan motor or compressor circuit, so there should be no shock hazard on the reversing coil wires, from the caps. Just check for no AC voltage on the reversing coil wires before you dig into them.
