Title: Monterey with Tag axle
Post by: Stan Simpson on July 04, 2020, 08:13:57 PM
Dennis, not to hijack your thread, http://beaveramb.org/forum/index.php/topic,9973.msg68031.html#msg68031 but I just wanted to comment on your tag-axle Monterey. Its only the third one I've ever seen. One on the road, and there is one in storage at the same place I store mine when we are in our Florida winter home. My understanding is they were only made in 2009, and strictly for the Canadian market.

Interesting to see a tag on a Monterey.

You’re right, Stan.  I didn’t know there was a Monterey over 40 ft.  And that big with still the C9 engine.  It has to deal with 53k GCWR, about 5 tons more potential load than my 37 footer.

According to the brochures in Coach Assist, in ‘09 there were just 2 lengths, 40’ and 42’8”.  Prior years we have brochures for Montereys went from 34’ to 40’, but we don’t have all the brochures.  The 40’ version had the slightly smaller Cummins 360.

Joel, Stan,
It's probably on the same chassis as the 43' Contessas (e.g. Bayshore and Westport). They also are powered by the 400HP C9 and do just fine. Our 2007 Contessa climbs hills almost as easily as our 2000 Marquis with a 425 C12. One difference I noticed is that the shift points in the 07 with a 3000 tranny seem to be set to maximize power/torque more so than the Marquis with the 4000 tranny. No data on this, just an observation. That said, the high operating temperature of the C9 (204F thermostat) limits one's ability to use that power on hills as you can rapidly get into an over temp condition if you don't manage the engine for torque rather than speed. The C12 wasn't bothered by that to any significant degree.

In a conversation with Gerald re RVs in general, the 09 Montereys with C9s came up. He noted that these engines are, most assuredly, derated 425 HP units and not the 400 HP unit that CAT produced until 2007. Cleared up a question for me as I couldn't see why Monaco would have mothballed 2006 engines to use in a specific 09 model.  If we are incorrect I hope an 09 Monterey owner will let us know.

Hi,

We just purchased a 2009 Monterey with tag axle.  We are hoping someone may have a manual(s) they would be willing to copy and send or advise where we may find this info. Thanks... Natalie the co-pilot

Natalie,
We don't have the 09 Monterey Owners Manual but we do have the 09 Contessa Owners Manual in Coach Assist (Private BAC Members Only board). It should be almost identical to the Monterey manual as both had tag axles and basically the same chassis. The Contessa had an RR10S (steel framing) and the Monterey a RR10R (aluminum framing). If you have the CAT C9 engine the info in the Contessa manual should be applicable as the 400Hp unit offered in 09 was a detuned 425Hp C9.
If you find an electronic (e.g. pdf) copy of the manual please send me a copy and I'll add it to the library.
