The 2005 C13 Acert engine has a "catalytic converter" muffler. This is not available from CAT,and apparently no longer available from Donaldson (listed as obsolete) who I believe was the supplier to Monaco/Beaver.
Has anyone had to replace their muffler? If so what did you use?
It appears that CAT (or EPA) required the chassis builder to install a catalytic muffler - but I can find no information on whether or not the engine would know or care if a standard muffler is installed (I assume a standard non-catalytic muffler would have less back pressure).

Mike, unless you have damage to the muffler it can be pulled and baked out to clear the soot out and re-installed. I believe this service is suggested about every 50,000 miles. Check with your local Cat Dealer or major Truck repair facility.

I have not seen this maintenance task in any of my manuals. Have you had it done? Sounds expensive.
I know there is a service procedure for cleaning a DPF muffler (my muffler has no way to "open" it - it's one piece).
On a gas-engine car, the catalytic converter has oxygen pumped into it to make it work, mine has nothing looks like a regular muffler.
Do I have the option to just replace it with a non-catalyst muffler?

At first, I was wondering if you/they meant DPF but your picture just looks like a regular ol’ muffler.

Mike, Where does this info for the muffler come from, I've not heard of them Monaco installing catalytic mufflers??

My muffler is not ready for replacement yet.
I was talking with another BAC member who had to replace their C12 muffler (a regular muffler) due to damage hitting something. But that talk got me curious about my muffler and where to get one, and how much it would cost. This is just research work for now.
On the irv2 forum another C13 owner replaced his muffler and mentioned that it was a "catalytic converter" muffler. That was the fist time I heard of such a muffler on a diesel.
UPDATE: After further research - I see now that a catalytic muffler is pretty common in later model diesels (actually its called a "Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)" system).
Now that I know the correct terminology I can probably find what I'm looking for.

We've bought a used muffler with 36k miles on it from Colaws RV Salvage, Missouri. 10389 Cimarron Rd, Carthage, MO 64836. Phone 877-548-2125. Paid $200.00. Maybe 2 years ago. Tried the straight pipe route and went back to original. Dave Atherton convinced me to go back to original. Intake temps are more consistent. Just look for a used with low miles.

Does your C9 use the catalytic converter type muffler too?
I'm not sure one can tell what kind it is by looking at the outside of the muffler (maybe there is a honey-comb structure inside you can see looking into it).

Yes it is a catalytic type. Platinum lined I was told and I think it was used in 2004-5-6. Never had the desire to take one apart.

Was the DOC used in the 2007 beaver?

I've been told that all ACERT engines use the DOC mufflers up until the DPF (Diesel Particulate filter) went into use (engine serial numbers starting with LEE). If you have the DPF it looks something like this.
