Title: Dash AC/Htr Blower Motor ID
Post by: Jack W Hannah on July 09, 2022, 11:47:59 PM
Service shop reports the blower motor in the Dash AC of my '02 Patriot is getting hot and shuts off, then resumes operation when it cools down.
Has anyone else experienced this situation and is motor replacement the most likely solution or could something else be going on?

Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like it has a thermal fuse in it and shuts down when it gets hot, or it just trips the breaker because it starts to pull to much current to turn.  If you pull the motor out and feel any resistance when it spins the bearings are probably on their way out.  I am sure there are resistance values listed that can be used to test the windings, but I do not know what those values are.

I am not sure what a motor cost, but if its not to much I would probably replace it if I went to the trouble to pull the old one out.

Jack,
It's probably a VDO motor. They are available at NAPA, etc and not too pricey. Be sure to note which terminals 12v and gnd are attached to on the original because if you reverse them the fan will run backwards.

    Jack,
The blower motors are a common item with most known parts houses. Napa has them for about $40.00. Marquis coaches have 2 blowers, one is clockwise rotation and the one next to it is counterclockwise rotation. Make sure you get the correct one. Steve is mistaken about running in the wrong direction. Yes, you can get them to run backwards but the real issue is the "blower wheel fins" are designed to push air in only one direction. Fun project on a patriot because you may have to remove the center dash cabinet to gain access to the blower housing 6 screws. Fred

Fred,
I had the rotation issue in my 00 Marquis. Even with the right fan, hooking up power backwards would cause the motor to run backwards and thus throw no air out the vents.

Sorry Steve, I misunderstood our previous conversation when you had the issue. Fred
