My 2002 Patriot w/Cat 3126B has only been driven approx 500 miles during the past year with engine starts at least monthly. Oil was changed approx 18 months ago. Is it really necessary to change oil at this time and if so why?
Any input on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Jack,
IMHO there is no need to change oil until it reaches the mileage or hour limit set by the mfgr. I use this approach on both the RV and the toad (but keep track of the total miles for tire rotation, etc. purposes).

Another opinion, I pull an oil sample from the engine and transmission once per year and send into JG Lubricant Lab, but there are other labs, they can tell you the condition of the equipment and the oil and recommend when to change or resample.
