Title: squacking backup alarm
Post by: Keith Oliver on December 06, 2011, 06:27:19 PM
My 98 Contessa has a backup alarm that has changed from a "Beep - Beep" to a muted squack.  I have not had much chance to figure out where the unit is located, as I have only left the transmission in Reverse and walked to the rear once to check on it.  The noise is loudest at the engine air intake, so likely I will need to lift the bed and run the coach in reverse while I listen from in the bedroom.  Difficult when my wife is not keen (understement) on even sitting in the driver's chair while the engine is on.
Does anyone know about these units?  Has mine ingested a sick Mallard?  How do I entice the squacker out?

;D Snort, snort! Sorry, just had a mental picture of a Beav snarking down a duck.

On another thread I have been seeking a Beaver logo for my horns.  Maybe I'll go for a duck instead.

On my 2002 Thunder it is mounted on the bulkhead at the end of the passenger side frame rail at the rear (back of MH). It is about 2in. round by about 4in. long. I believe it was mounted the same on my 1998 Monterey. Have you tried turning the key on without starting the engine and putting the transmission in reverse? Marty

Mine is all the way in the back, passenger side, accessable by crawling under the coach. I disconnected mine cuz it drove me crazy!

Marty: Tried that, but it didn't allow any noise, so I started and put it in reverse, then got the weird sounds.  I am just about to do as Randy did, if I can't get a better sound out of it.  The old method of a couple of short blasts on the horn will work.

This is normal in high traffic areas even if you have a back up alarm.

Ha
So far all my backups in "traffic" have required a walking warning person.  I am generally more concerned with the dozing neighbours, who would recognize the normal beep of a backup alarm, but may be calling the SPCA when they hear mine.

Are you telling us the SPCA abd PETA members would frown from your sound?

If you accidentally back over a duck, would it sound any different?

I keep trying to come up with a good Beavers-Ducks line for this thread, but since my toothy bros have been in the basement football-wise the last couple of years, and the toothless fantails haven't, my sense of humor just hasn't been all it's quacked up to be lately.  :P

Thank goodness for basketball!

I would be willing to bet that an Oregon Duck got sucked into the system!

Hey Joel are you missing one?

No, Leah.  All the Ducks on my street are unfortunately still there.
