Title: Headlight Assembly
Post by: Dennis Crawford on March 17, 2013, 08:56:12 PM
Just a quick update.  We are still searching for an air leak in my 2005 Monterey.  We have found 5 and are still looking.

Also, my passenger side headlight assembly is leaking somewhere and it is full of moisture.  I tried to headlights to evaporate it, but did not work.  Does anyone know the exact source of the headlight assemblies for the 2005 Monterey Huntington IV?

Dennis

From the thread titled "Brighter Headlights":

I think that the headlights on a 2007 Contessa differ in the design of the headlight assembly as well the mount from the 2006 Monterey that the question was about. The 2006 Monterey uses the headlight assemblies from the 1999 to 2002 Lincoln Navigator complete with their adjusting brackets. These headlights were used in most Beaver coaches from 2000 to 2006. The design of the pocket in the front cap varies a little in blub accessibility, however all of them are adjustable from underneath that I know of if you are skinny.

Dennis, there happens to be a bunch of Beaver headlights on eBay right now ,and they do have those ones for $163.00 each, not sure if that's a good deal or not, just go to ebay motors and type Beaver headlights.

Dave,

Thanks.  If they are indeed the Lincoln Navigator the cheapest I have found (not OEM) was close to $500.

Definitely check them out then Dennis, I did check again just before, I posted and they do say they will fit an 05 Monterey, they seem to have a large selection of Beaver headlights listed right now, for a bunch of models and years.

I guess I'd be checking for Lincoln parts at a wrecking yard, but first I'd consider removing and disassembling the leaky one to see if it can be cleaned and resealed, or if it is nothing more than a dirt-plugged weep hole or vent.  In cool weather I imagine moist air trapped inside condenses on the cooler lens surface.  Heat from the lamp would only temporarily  re-evaporate it, then it would condense out again after the headlights had been off for awhile.

I don't have this issue with my headlights, though there is some problem with the taillamp units;  conceivably, it would be aggravated this time of year, or in climates where the day to night ambient temperature varies greatly.

Dennis,
You should be able to buy aftermarket headlight assemblies online to fit your coach for less than $100 each if you can not seal the leak.

The reason for the leak is that there was a 1/2" lip at the top of the original headlamp. It went under the hood on the Navigator. Beaver/Monaco would grind that section off. We had moisture in ours and let it dry out in heat of the summer.  Pulled the assembly and sealed that top edge with plastic glue. That was back in 06 or 07. Now I'm ready to either polish the lens or replace the assembly because of clouding of the plastic.  Polishing and a clear coat does not seem to last acording to other forums. But we'll see.

Jim:

I just did it, so will need a couple of years to know how well it is lasting, but in the Auto parts store, the recommendation was to get the more expensive 3m polishing kit.  that is the kit that has you sand with progressively finer papers, to 3000 grit, then use polishing compound.  I have glass headlights, but plastic tail lights, which I polished.  They now look new.

The Mid ninities Patriots used an 87 or 88 Ford Pick Up truck Head Lamp. Use the DOT number on the headlamp to get the right one.

Turtle Wax also has a headlamp polish kit that contains polish, lubricant and multiple grit sponges. I've used it on the coach tail lamp lenses and on my Liberty and F150 with very good results. The polish appears to be aggressive enough for most cleaning apps.
