Title: Onan genset fuel filter replacement, 7500KW
Post by: Joe McNary on January 26, 2010, 09:40:00 PM
Recently while changing the fuel filter on my Onan generator, I was unable to exchange the new filter without having diesel fuel run down my arm, all over the front of my sweater, face, etc;  I sure you get the picture.   I had trouble threading on the top fuel line.  There must be a better way, as I seemed not too have the correct technique.  Thanks, Joe.

Joe, I have not changed mine but did remove the door when changing the oil filter. It has 2 mounting bolts and is very easy to remove. Now to help with all the leaking fuel I suggest you change the filter with the main fuel tank below 1/4 and raise the front end to help reduce any possibility of gravity flow. According to my ONAN manual the fuel filter is due change every 500 hours. Good luck!

I vaguely remember a tip posted somewhere that suggested you make some wrist bands.  You cut the sleeves off an old sweatshirt and role them up.  As I recall, you hold the rolled up sleeves to your wrists with rubber bands or zip ties.  The idea is to catch most of the spilled fuel before it gets to your elbows and beyond!

At a FMCA rally I over heard a conversation but I didn't ask additional questions. This guy had installed a shut off valve in the line between the fuel tank & generator somewhere. If anyone has an idea please publish the specs.

Get your self a needle nose vice grip slide to pieces of rubber hose over each jaw. Now find the in hose at the back of the Gen. and clamp the hose. Remove the metal line fitting at the filter.now take the nut that holds the filter off
Now raise the filter.and remove the last line. Hope this helps

After filling my armpits with diesel the first couple times I replaced that filter, I bought a pair of hose pinch pliers. They are made for just that purpose.

I bought these http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00947051000P?vName=Tools&cName=Auto&MechanicsTools&sName=Auto%20Specialty%20Tools&psid=FROOGLE01&sid=IDx20070921x00003a

Problem solved!

Another choice is from Amazon.  I have a set of 3/4 inch hose pinch pliers I bought there last year.

I'll be using them today when I change the electric element on my hydro hot.
