Title: Heat pump circuit breaker
Post by: Dan Murphy on March 07, 2014, 04:23:48 PM
Well not a good week for us. Along with our toilet seal acting up now our front air unit keeps tripping the circuit breaker. Just after leaving the dealer you would hope everything works properly for awhile!
Would anyone have any ideas why this would keep happening and what I can look for to remedy the situation.
I am plugged into shore power at 30 amp and only using the front heat pump to keep the chill out in the morning.but it won't stay on . Would turning on another appliance like a hair dryer or coffe pot cause the heat pump circuit to trip?
I thought the breaker at the pedestal would trip before the breaker in the coach, but iI really am still trying to learn.

Dan,

You need to define what breaker is tripping. Is it the pedestal 30 amp park breaker or one that is just to your heat pump on your breaker panel? If it is the park one ask the owner to change it out or try another campsite. many of these breakers get tripped a lot and weaken with age, so they trip at lower amp values. With 30 amp supply you may need to load manage more. The heat pump may be pulling 15 amps, the coffee maker 10 amps and you still need to have the battery charging system running etc. If you have an electric element in a water heating system you are already over loaded. These coaches need a 50 amp circuit to be well supplied.

Thanks Ed and thanks Rich  for the phone call also. I believe my wife turning on the hair dryer is what was tripping the breaker in the coach. The aqua hot electric element was on and the coffee pot so it had to be when she started her blow dryer, I just didn't put it all together at the time!
I think it's ok I just need to explain to her a little better about the amp usage. She said she asked me if it was ok but I probably didn't listen.

Dan,

Never admit it, no matter how true!

I often monitor the amps used per leg on the Aladdin.  It's a good way to get an idea what device uses what amps, and learn to manage electric use.  The fridge, the electric side of the HydroHot, the battery charger, or even the coffee pot's hot plate often cut in and out of a circuit, cycling and taking it over its limit unexpectedly.  As mentioned, you have to be more vigilant while on 30 amp park power.

It's also a good idea to set your inverter control panel to match whatever power level you are hooked to at each campsite.  My Magnum has multiple settings from 15 amps to 50.
