Post by: Ken Ullman on July 09, 2014, 05:45:30 PM
Is there anyone that we can call for help?

Ken,
Knowing your location may help someone ID a repair facility.
Try spraying a bit of WD-40 into the ignition switch along side the key and then wiggler the key to try and turn it. It may lubricate the stuck tumbler. Also if you have roadside assistance (AAA, Coach Net, etc) they will be able to assist you.

Ken,

I copied this from an earlier post...I had been here before with my switch replacement...

I have a spot on my ignition switch that is not conducting, so if I start and release the switch back to the ignition on position it will sometimes shut down and it has been getting worse with age. Like us.... things seldom get better with age. We are back home and it is time for a repair.

I did a search for 'ignition switch" and could not find the PN listed anywhere on our BAC site. I think there is a broad number of coach models that use this version of a GM ignition switch that dates back to the 60s. This note is to document some PNs for references:  Delco D1406A, Standard US84, Borg Warner CS81. I consider all of these sources to be high quality suppliers.

The key cylinder is a separate component, so if you are having trouble with that part of the assembly you will need to use other PNs. Lock Cylinder: Standard US24 for example.

The key assembly has to be released with a paper clip, while in a certain position, before the assembly can be removed and replaced. It is not exactly Fort Knox security but if you did not know how to release the key cylinder then there is an interlock that would not let you remove and replace the switch assembly.

There is a good write up, photos, and a linked video of the procedure for the replacement from a Foretravel owner at this website.

 Hope this helps, Later Ed

Call Beaver Coach Service 1-800-382-2597.  I believe the ignitions are General Motors (  ??) ) so perhaps any GM dealer within range could help.  If you are a member of CoachNet they can put a technician on the phone with you to help, usually right away.  Turning off the Chassis main switch should cut power to the engine for the time being, but you didn't say which model and year coach you have.

Thanks to Ed and Steve and all that called. I got a service call from locksmith who took the ignition switch apart and discovered faulty core cylinder. He was able to bypass it so I could drive to town (20 miles) so he could replace the cylinder. Now I have two keys, hey I got only one with the coach! So it turned out well. I admit I was nervous being that far from a town and not able to use the start key!
Thanks again, and maybe my experience will help someone in the future

Thanks Joel and Keith!
I was able to replace the ignition switch cylinder. The old one just froze up, I don't think it was worn out, so maybe they can just give out.  I did call the nearest GM dealer who did not do service calls but recommended a nearby locksmith. Yes it is the old type GM ignition switch.

Hey Ken: how did you shut off the engine ? Or did you let it run until the locksmith arrived?

Hi Niel,

Great question! I shut the engine off with the rear start switch on the passenger side rear compartment. We got the key out with WD-40 before the locksmith arrived.

Oh,yeah. I remember on my ")! Patriot I would be able to start from the rear. (Can't do that on my "05 Thunder). Did the rear start switch act as a kill switch?

Neil, the rear start switch seems to have 3positions, foreword, middle or neutral, and rear start. The middle position acted like kill, the engine stopped with the switch between rear and foreword start (lucky for me, as I could not turn the key off!)
