Title: Weigh stations
Post by: neil omalley on December 23, 2015, 09:52:35 PM
Have any of you guys/ladies been through a weigh station ? I'm talking about an inspection weighing. I subscribe to a newsletter called "RV Travel.com. There was a recent article discussing weigh stations. Googling the subject would seem to indicate WE should be stopping at these inspection points.New Jersey ,as an example, requires "ALL VEHICLES WEIGHING 10,001"to stop. Pennsylvania "REQUIRES ALL LARGE RECREATIONAL VEHICLES". I,for one, have never stopped at one of them. Thoughts?

Hey if the sign says you have to weigh, you go in, in Pa there are a lot of weigh in motion setup, when you enter a turnpike (toll Road) you will cross a scale usually. Any state patrol or most any law enforcement officer can haul you off to a scale and have you weighed. I have heard of some being turned around because they were overweight on a axle, don't actually know if that is true.

I understand about the cop being able to pull you over. Do you stop at all those published weigh stations?

Number of years ago we ran into weigh stations that required we weigh on I68 in eastern Maryland. After getting weighted at the  first one, the remainder green lighted us through, even though we did have to exit and then re-enter the highway w/o stopping.

Neil, You just have to pay attention to the signage, if it states ever vehicle over a certain weigh must enter, then you had better go in. You don't want to blow by one of these scales and have them come after you. Out here in the west they don't pay much attention to RV's but now days with the electronic signs they can put up any message at any time. Just watch out for the signs.

When we came through New Mexico recently I noticed the signs at most weigh stations also said in addition to commercial etc, all with towbars stop.  None were open so it was mute.  Does anyone know about this?

Mike,
Found this on one of the trucker guide pages re NM.

"All commercial vehicles are required to enter the ports of entry in New Mexico if they are open. This means anyone hauling anything that is used for profit must enter. If someone is transporting their own personal goods (moving etc), they are not required to enter the ports no matter how large the truck."
