Title: Brake noise
Post by: Lawrence Tarnoff on April 14, 2016, 06:53:37 PM
I get a noise -- kind of a high-pitched fart -- when I release the service brakes.  No squeaking when I engage the brakes, but always a little squeak when I release them.  These are, I believe, air brakes or air-assisted hydraulic.  Is this noise normal?

I believe it is.  I think I could describe the same noise in mine.  It's the air system.

Larry,
Your 99 Contessa had air pressure assisted hydraulic disc brakes, but I think that your 2003 Monterey has air operated drum brakes. Therefore, the air pressure release will be louder on the Monterey and the brake shoes in the drum brakes will also make more noise as the brake shoes move against the backing plates. So the noise that you described sounds normal, but any grinding or metal to metal brake noise is reason to immediately have the brakes serviced.
