Replacing Air Dryer
« on: September 08, 2021, 12:57:53 PM »
On my 2005 Monterey my air dryer purge valve was stuck open so I took it to Ring Power (CAT) they said I needed a new dryer and replaced it now it builds water in my tanks and keeps burning up my valve for my step cover.  I drive for 10 or 15 MINS and stop and bleed tanks and get a spray of water out.  If I drive all day I get a stream of water out.  Can anyone tell me what the direct replacement air dryer would be.  Now that they have removed the old one and replaced it I'm wondering if they installed the correct type.  If there is any other reason I would be making so much water please help.

My 2005 Patriot uses the Meritor/Wabco System Saver 1200 Air Dryer.

Yours is probably the same (Beaver/Monaco used many of the same parts throughout the line).

But - If the Air Dryer was just installed (or did they just change the dryer filter) and your getting a lot water through the air system, why not take it back to the installer and ask them why?

Also, according to the Bendix air compressor installation/troubleshooting manual, the "discharge line" from the compressor to the dryer needs to be a certain length, 12 ft. according the chart for RVs (so long enough to let the hot air cool some - before entering the dryer).

Mike thanks for the info.  I have taken it back and they told me it was a bad dryer and replaced it again with the same model in you pictures.  I would not think you would have to change out or add air line when replacing a air dryer.

It sounds like they have the drier plumbed wrong .you would think it would be a simple case of remove the old drier and install a new one using the same line port configuration but it would appear your new drier is doing nothing which would lead me to the belief that they have something plumbed wrong at the drier allowing the AR to bypass the drier element.
Also as Mike pointed out the air line length between the compressor and the drier is important as it cools the air allowing the water to concentrate before the drier can remove it.
If you have an air leak in the coach making the compressor run over time that can create a large amount of water as well.
But I'd take a good look at the air line routing at the drier making sure the lines are routed correctly and that it purges with each compressor cycle.
The manual talks about a check valve not properly installed in there troubleshooting section

Hope this helps

When I'm on the road up to speed the green needle stays at 120 PSI and the red needle goes to 120 then bounces to 100 and it does that that almost continuously, could that indicate an issue?

Depending on the road your on the air suspension will be constantly replenishing air to the air bags .
And so e of the dash A/C units used an air operated Ventura to create vacuum to run the controls these would bleed off air constantly.
The air compressor cycling is normal depending on the the frequency of the cycling .

To check for leaks chalk the wheels re?ease the parking brake , run the air pressure to 120 psi  then shut off the engine turn the key back to the run position with all the accessories that you would use running down the road turned on .
Now get out and walk around the coach listening for the telltale hissing sound of a large leak .
Pay special attention to the parking brake spring brake chambers and hoses for leaks as they are under pressure the whole time the parking brakes are released.

Personally if this all stated after the new air drier was installed I'd concentrate my efforts on the drier plumbing by comparing it to the installing guide.
Look for the aforementioned check valve as the troubleshooting guide points directly to it being a possible cause of the water buildup.

Hope this helps
