Roof Painting

Finally getting to the roof paint job.  Been procrastinating too long. I plan to remove as much of the old Dicor as possible. Should I paint, then redo the Dicor, or do the new Dicor first, then paint up to it? THanks for your input.

You may well get differing opinions, but I would put down the dicor first and then coat the roof.  After cleaning up the old dicor the new layer should seal all the openings.  The roof coating can then protect the roof right up to and possibly over the dicor.  Just my opinion.

I painted right over the Dicor using Rustoleum Marine Deck Paint. The paint appears to keep the Dicor from aging. It's been on for about 6 years on our coach and still looks like the day I painted it.

Another nice feature of the Rustolium deck paint is the glossy "non skid" feature. Mine is 5 years old and looks great!

It's a great product and easy to use, ours is 3 years old and looks like new.

Thanks guys.  I’m using the Rustoleum deck paint.   Maybe do a primer coat and first coat of finish, then Dicor, then another finish over the Dicor.

Adam,
No primer needed if roof is in decent shape. But apply 2 coats of the Marine Deck paint. First coat will look a bit rough but 2nd coat sets up very smooth. Recommend you remove old dicor, apply new, clean roof, roughen surface with red scotch pads, mask off as needed including roof edges but overlap paint slightly with deck paint to help keep clear coat from peeling. Some have applied the deck paint over the roof radius and ended it at the belt line. More on previous posts re roof painting or Rustoleum.

Did mine a couple years ago. Clean roof thoroughly with all purpose cleaner, rough up with 150 grit sandpaper and wipe off, wipe off roof with mineral spirit, apply marine Top Side paint. Let dry for a day and ally second coat. Top Side paint is an excellent marine base paint. I got mine at Home Depot.

The directions on the can recommends you roll it on and apply a second coat 24 hours later. If you thin it 15% and spray it on, then it states to sand with 220 sand paper between coats. Fred

I used 1 1/2 qts of Rustoleum Marine Deck paint per coach. I only painted the "white" section of the roofs with a slight overlap of the clear coat. Didn't do the radiuses as some do.

Qts. As Fred suggests, buy 2 qts and you'll have enough with some left over..
