Wheel Bearings
« on: October 02, 2023, 11:11:15 PM »
When I stopped in Lake George today I saw this around my front right tire, see attachment.  Can I drive my Beaver any distance or do I have to be towed?  I didn't notice any problems on the short drive here from Montreal.

Is the fluid oil or something else? If oil, then check the oil level in the oil bath by removing the center plug. There is a full line in the clear plastic that the oil should be reaching to be full. I would check the bolts holding the oil bath to the hub, making sure they are snug. Also, the plug itself could be leaking, check that also. As long as you have oil in the oil bath, then you can drive it to a repair facility if you can not do it yourself. It takes 75/90 or 80/90 gear oil. You can get the oil at any auto parts store. Hope this helps.

The fluid was red and is not the wheel bearing fluid.  I think it is brake fluid and a mobil repair service is on their way.  The wheel bearing fluid levels are correct it is not visible from outside the enclosure but once I removed the plug the level was right at the plug level.

The red fluid is coming from the leveling system.  One of the leveling jacks blew a seal.  As long as the leveling jacks return to their up position I should be fine to make it back home later this week.  No animals were harmed during this troubleshooting procedure.

It is ATF Dexron III I believe. The reservoir is up front by the steps. It controls both the front slide and the leveler jacks. As you stated, should be no problem driving as long as you don’t use leveling jacks. Make sure reservoir is full if you are operating front slide. Hope this helps, good luck.

Does anyone know where  I can get a new leveling jack?  This is a 2002 Beaver Marquis and I found a service center, Mercer Spring, that will install a new jack if I bring it to him.  It is the right front jack.  I live in the Trenton NJ area.

If you have RVA jacks you might check Brazel's. I purchased a rear jack from them to replace bent jack and it fit same as original. https://www.rvajack.com/

Those jacks are hard to come by. Another problem is they are welded together and no one wants to work on them. If you can find a shop that will cut the the end cap off and repair what you have, you will probably be better off. They are SMC leveling jacks, do a little Googling and see what is available. Hope this helps, good luck.

This thread was continued in thread "2001 Marquis Jasper leveler question" where I found local shops, Creston Hydrolics and Mercer Spring who agreed to cooperate and remove the jack return it to Beaver Coach Sales, reinstall the jack for about $2000.  My 2002 Marqius is leveling fine now.

I think I will replace one jack every year till all 4 are new/repaired models.
