Identify an Entry Door Awning

(1/3) > >>

Neal E Weinmann:
2005 Beaver Monterey Bayview - Awning over the entry door is stuck shut. Key and operating switches inside are labeled Carefree of Colorado, but unit has nothing identifying on it, nor any obvious external attachment hardware, so it seems like it needs to be open to service it or remove it. Can anyone identify it, have experience with this unit or has the manual available?

Joel Ashley:
I had similar issues (still not fixed) 5 years ago.  My son power washed the Coach and likely forced water into the motor capsule, cuz it always worked fine before then.  After removing panel(s) that hold the control devices inside over the door, and testing all possibilities with a meter, I concluded the motor was shot, likely corroded contacts somewhere within.  But getting the motor out and/or the entire unit off the motorhome proved undoable.  The tubular motor must be slid out toward the rear where the main awning arm restricts it.  The mounts holding the unit on the coach can’t be accessed with the awning closed.  After many hours I gave up and opted to let experienced BCS techs deal with it, among a list of other fixes the next time in Bend.

For discussions here about the issue, use the “Search” tab above that’s to the right of the “Home” and the “Help” tabs above in the menus line.  Don’t use the Search field in the upper right of this page as it’s not as reliable.  Then type into the ‘Search for’ field, the word “awning”, and into the ‘by user’ field, “Joel Ashley”.

Neal,
I think it is a Carefree Freedom OTD awning. You will find manuals on it in Coach Assist under Awnings.

    Neal,
It is a carefree OTD (over the door). More than likely it is the motor. Really bad engineering because the motor end cap facing up at 12:00 position has 2 vent holes in it. On all the ones that I have replaced, I sealed those holes with RTV and did not have a unit fail or unhappy customers. Hope this helps, Fred

Fred Brooks:
Excuse me, the awning is a Dometic Oasis Elite. There is a video on You tube that explains the procedure to remove the motor.
Fred
