C9 engine problem resolved
« on: January 29, 2012, 03:03:00 PM »
This is a follow up to the C9 engine problem from August 2010.

Finally on 2 cold starts the check engine light came on for low oil pressure last Spring.  The service center called Cat and they replaced the oil pump in the pan under warranty.  This is exactly the same problem and solution as David B had.  After  5,000 mi and no more black smoke and power loss, I think my engine is repaired.  The performance since I purchased the coach and now is remarkable.

So any power loss and smoke issues, check the oil pressure pump in the oil pan.  This is an 06 400HP engine not the 425HP.

Any other changes, MPG? Temp? What year is your coach?

Much more power, MPG about the same 7 to 7.9 in the flatlands and towing, 6 to 7 in the mountains towing.  Average speed 63 to 64 MPH ( just below or at 1500 RPM's).  I have found over 1500 RPM's the MPG starts to go down.  Engine temp by the Aladdin 204 to 208 about the same.  I think the temp is actually less but that is what the Aladdin says.  My coach is a 2008, Rome with a 400 HP engine.

This info is for the 400 HP C9 ('06 emissioned) not 425 HP C9, which is an '07 emissioned engine.

Did you get any black diesel residue on your towed or the back your coach?  I have noticed that with my 2008 Contessa (425 hp)
Just wonder if might be a related issue with the C9 (425's ) also.

I get a little soot on my tow vehicle, but nothing like my 03 engine.  I think with diesel engines and the tailpipe at the back of the coach there is no way to escape the soot.

Leah, the soot on the 2007+ engines is normal, especially if not driven hard.  It's a by product of exhaust regen burning.
