HWY 93
« on: March 13, 2012, 03:18:40 AM »
We plan on attending the Beaver rally in Las Vegas then we will head for home, my thought was using the Hwy 93 from Vegas to Twin Falls, I have never used this route I would think that we are heading north at the end of March so the weather should not be an issue. Has anyone used this road?

Yep, it's a great route but there is another road....318 I think, or something like that, that cuts off of 93 to the west and rejoins in Ely.  Very pleasant drive.  It will avoid some passes.

Think about spending a couple of day in JackPot.  Pretty nice RV park at the casino and a nice 18 hole golf course.

We drove south on 93 to Vegas about 6 weeks ago.  Lots of big sky scenery and smooth pavement.  We camped in Baker City, Jackpot, Ely and Los Vegas.  There are not many campgrounds on the route.  We stayed at The Prospector in Ely and Cactus Pete's in Jackpot.

After Vegas, I think we will go north through Utah and revist some of the scenic geological wonders.

Thanks Dick, I took a look om google and the route to Ely is US-93 N/Great Basin Hwy and NV-318 N
a 4-5 hr run do you recall the name of the RV park?

We stayed at cactus Petes in Jackpot...lower level...where that take reservations.  Nice park wierd pull throughs where they can put two RV's per site.  Only on weekends is it full enough where that actually happens though.

We also stayed at the KOA in ELY.  No bad for a KOA.  Nice town to visit and a little 9 hole course for those so inclined.

Not much else between L.V. and Ely.

If you plan to use US 93 northward to Twin Falls from Las Vegas, you're better using this route after April.  We pulled out of the Vegas rally on March 25th, and encountered winds at 40mph+, and drifting snow most of the drive.

We did a planned stop overnight at the KOA Ely.  The park was OK, but watch out for the WIFI.  It will download a new home page before you know what hit you, and it doesn't work!!!

We did keep the water off, and I elected to pull in the sides overnight (all slides but the bedroom.)  The next day I had to defrost the slide with hot water to get it back in place.  It was mostly ice buildup.

The run up to Twin Falls was, again, very windy and drifting snow (no ice on the road) most of the trip.
We spent the next night at the 93 RV park in Twin Falls. The wifi worked at the park, but the parking pads are very soft for jacks even with blocks we couldn't lift the rig.  I think by April, the pads may dry out, so for a summer park I am sure it's OK.

I think US 93 is generally not a bad drive, but you do push 8000ft on the climb into Ely. So if MPG is a problem for you, I think the Salt lake route will be much better.

We did that road going south, and will probably do it again on out northward trip.

Yeh, the Ely KOA is a trip, they stuck us out on the back row by the fire support trucks.  We never did get the wifi to work in the boonies.

Did you take 318 into Ely, or stay on 93 the whole way?

Next time in Twin between April 1 and Nov 1, try the county park at Rock Creek.  It's not a bad campground, and pretty inexpensive -$15.  It's immediately west of St. Lukes Magic Valley Medical Center on the north side of Hwy 30/93.   It's down in the creek canyon and not visible from the highway (Addison Ave), plus the sign at the entrance is small, so keep your eyes peeled.

Hi Bill and Joel,

Bill, the corrugated aluminum portion of the topper was rock hard.  I tried to break it loose by hand, but just couldn't make it roll, so I soaked them with hot water while Chris ran the slide in and out until they would bend! ( hard to do with a 6ft ladder)

Joel, I will give rock creek a try.  I am sure it's a better value than the S 93 RV park!

I have had parks that we will just pull out of.  This one is really not that bad.  They are doing a bunch of work, and the ground is very soft!!!

I buried a 15x15 Plywood pad with the front jack.  I am not sure if I will will get the block up.  I think I will need a pick to get it out tomorrow.  Hey its better a block than an axle.

Dang Joel! I didn't even know that park was there and I thought I knew Twin pretty well. Anyway it looks like a nice place. Just a heads up tho, St. Lukes picked up her skirts and moved to a new building on the other side of the new Walmart just off of Pole Line. Your map looks like the park will be found even without that landmark.

Our son's family lives down on Washington St. South, but I can't quite fit the coach down his driveway to park in his big yard, and when I parked on his front yard we left ruts that I had to fix.  So when someone mentioned the park we tried it and stayed about 10 days.  It works out well since Lee was born in Murtaugh and grew up in Hagerman, we can travel in all directions to visit relatives, and see the kids, grand kids, and great grandchildren on Washington St. only a few miles south.  The main drag, Blue Lakes Blvd., is a hop away as are malls, Fred Meyer Store, countless restaurants, and Costco.  We stayed at Hwy 93 Park once, but was too expensive for what and where it was.

New Yorkers who parked next to us at Rock Creek liked the area enough to buy a nearby lot and settle in for good on a small horse ranch.  It gets a bit too hot and dry in summer for my native beaver tail, but okay to visit.  They expanded the park to the west in 2008 I think, but the 9 spots on the east end are nicer and all face the well kept green space and the creek, though none on that side are pull throughs.  No biggy for us since we stay for so long and the toad is always unhooked.  They didn't have sewer hookups, but a honey wagon goes through once a week, and a free dump is a mile southeast of the park at Washington St. N. and 4th Ave. W.

I actually thought they were adding onto the hospital, so am surprised they moved it.  They were building a new hospital down the road in '08, and I thought it was another outfit, but it must have been a new St. Luke's.  We got a kick sitting on the patio by the rig and watching the helicopters fly on and off the hospital roof and low over our heads, so I'll miss that.

Another RV park to check out if you travelling the Freeway from Twin heading West. High Adventure River Tours RV Park. Just off the freeway at Tuttle exit. Nice place with pull thru sites. 30-50 amp, pets welcome. $30-36 for 2 person. Between Wendell and Bliss exits.

And don't forget Hagerman RV Village, Jack and Barb.  $25/night (or less), full hookups, mostly pull-throughs, shade trees and other amenities.  Nice quiet small town with an interesting old museum and infamous Hagerman Horse fossils, famous fishing on Billingsley Creek, fishing on the Snake below the dam, trout farm nearby, hot springs resort, and Thousand Springs waterfall.  http://www.hagermanrvvillage.com/

Hagerman is a great place to stay! I would highly recommend it as a place to spend some time exploring.
