GPS Mounting
« on: February 10, 2013, 10:15:00 PM »
It looks like I am going to buy a new Garmin dezl 760.  My current 7200 is mounted on the dash of my 2005 Monterey just to the right of the steering wheel.  I used a mount from Garmin that is stuck to the dash, but is a wide "finger looking" mount.  This will not work with the new model.  Any ideas on how to mount the new unit.  Garmin will sell or give me a plastic disc that will adhere to the dash and the suction mount will go on that.  I just wonder if that will be stable.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have my Garmin mounted on the driver's side window.  I find it to be a very convenient location. I have it high enough so I can easily read the speedometer display on it.  I had an extra 12V outlet installed on the left side of the dashboard so I didn't have to string the wire all the way across the dash.  That's in addition to the cluster of three 12V outlets installed on the right side!

Dennis,
I have a Garmin NUVI and  mount it in the upper right corner of the dash panel using the  suction cup.  As long as the surface is clean and dry, there is no need to utilize the adhesive disk they supply.

I use RAM mounts. They are absolutely stable and solid as a rock. You can screw or bolt them in place which is more solid than a suction mount. There are myriad different configurations to fit any application.

Hi Dennis

I second the recommendation to use RAM mounts.  I have used them for both my StreetPilot 7200 and an additional six inch LCD display that I use to split the Alladin input.  I had to glue the RAM ball mount to the back of the LCD display.  The Garmin had the proper hole layout to use small bolts.  I have attached photos of how it worked in my 03 Monterey.

These are made by Garmin and are a very good mount for most all applications. The base is slightly tacky rubber and is moldable to conform to any shape. I can use it in the toad or the coach given it takes the shape of the dash surface where I place it. With just  a couple of slight hand manipulations it fits. Nice design and the ball fitting works for a Nuvi or the Dezl..

I've been going to order this device since it is highly rated by most users, and is portable between the coach and the toad.  In the meantime, since the suction cup would never stay stuck to the glass (probably due to a very slight curve in the glass) in a place that didn't have sun washout issues, I stuck the black disk to the semi-vertical area of the dash just to the right of the vent visible in Brad's 3rd photo.  The disk is as cheap as <$4 from some vendors;  mine came with our Nuvi, and as long as it and the suction cup are clean, it has stayed put for me.

Just for everyone's information, the Ram Mount is not available for the new 760 LMT from Garmin.  I called the RAM company and was told they had no plans to make this mount

You may want to check with Lido.  I have used several of their products for ham radio but they have solutions for mounting GPS units and other devices.  A link to their page is below.

Hello All

As I noted in my previous post, you do not need a RAM mount made specifically for your display, Garmin or otherwise.  Simply glue a RAM ball mount onto the back of your display and you are good to go using the RAM system.
