Surge Guard (2004 Marquis)
« on: June 19, 2013, 04:33:43 AM »
Does an '04 Marquis have a factory installed surge guard?  If not, do you recommend getting one?  They seem a bit pricey but could potentially prevent some expensive repairs (I suppose).  If so, would you add a hard-wired one or simply use one that plugs into the power post?

Thanks

Rick,
Not sure about the 04 but I added one  to my 2000 Marquis. I bought mine on Amazon for about $250. IMHO they are cheap insurance. The cost and hassle of a blown inverter is a real bummer. (You get a real sick feeling when you plug in and hear a buzz and then smell burnt circuit board). I opted for the hard wired unit. Installation is easy and you don't have to worry about theft, rain, etc.

Rick-

The Surge Guard transfer switch is a fairly good sized device.  On our Monterey the factory put it in the bay with the power cord reel and the cord is wired directly into the unit.  Some coaches have reels that aren't as accessible as being in a bay, but I'd expect a Marquis like yours to already have a Surge Guard, so perhaps you can take a gander around your cord's terminus for the box that looks like the one here:

I checked with Shawn at BCS and he told me that the box that I was referring to was NOT a surge protector. We do not have a surge guard transfer switch.  He said that not all the older Beavers had surge protectors.  I also asked him about the gray box by the power cord reel and he said that was also not a surge protector.  We are having one installed tomorrow.  So see if you can read what is on the transfer switch and the box next to it and the box near the power cord reel just to make sure.  Hope this helps.  Good luck.
