Coach Weigh In
« on: June 26, 2013, 07:29:44 AM »
I had a chance to weigh my coach yesterday, a 2002 40 FT Marquis without a tag axle. Just west of Missoula MT on I90 there is a CAT certified scale at an Exon truck stop that has a good layout for getting individual corner weights. Thought I would pass my numbers along for information....

There was one surprise and that was that my front axle has a pretty even weight distribution side to side. I expected the coach to be heavier on the driver side front, given that the rear axle driver side was certainly heavier. The coach was 3/4 full of fuel, 40 gallons of fresh water, 1/2 tank of grey water and 1/4 tank of black water. I carry a lot of tools and hardware on the passenger side bay pull out tray, which may account for a 300lb add on the passenger side. We also have a couch on that side as well as the Aquahot. No passengers were inside while the weight measurements were taken.

Total Weight all wheels on the scale...36,060lbs (GVWR 37,400lbs)
Front axle .....12,960lbs (front axle rating 14400lbs)
Rear Axle.....23,100 (rear axle rating 23000lbs)

I pulled on to the same scale again with just the driver side wheels centered on the scale.
Front driver side....6440lbs
Rear driver side....11860lbs

Repeated with the passenger side.
Front passenger side .....6480lbs
Back passenger side.....10,900lbs

I run the front tire pressure  at 115psi with a weight rating of 7370lbs for Michelin XZA2 Energy.
I run the rear dual pressure at 110psi with a weight rating of 12550lbs for Michelin XZA2 Energy.

There is a 380lb difference in the 4 corner measurement of total weight vs the two axle measurement method which is about a 1% error. I trust the front axle measurements given the axle total measurement vs the driver/passenger individual measurements were within 40lbs or .3%

My net of all this is that I am running my tire pressures a little higher than need be but I am comfortable with having the extra capacity as a safety margin. We are in good shape GVWR wise. The rear axle is 100lbs overweight or about .4%. The only issue is that one side carries 11860 vs an expected 11,500lb max. In my opinion that really is still not much of an issue given that side is still just 3% overweight. Compared to a lot of coaches I guess I am in good shape.....

Ed,
I did same with my 2000 Marquis with full fuel and water and grey/black tanks about 1/4 full.
Used CAT certified scale at Petro in Eloy AZ. Weighed driver side first, then complete coach to get passenger side weights. We are extremely close in weights.

Total Coach: 35060

Front axle: 12580
Rear axle: 22480

Front Driver side: 6440
Rear Driver side: 11880

Front Pass side: 6140
Rear Pass side: 10600

Running 110 PSI in Michilin XZE2s.  LRGs.
