2004 Monterey tow receiver capacity
« on: May 17, 2015, 03:00:53 AM »
Looking to upgrade our Toad. Very interested in the Ford Edge but GVWR is 5400 lbs. I'm OK to 6000 lbs with my tow bar but not sure what the Monterey's tow receiver is rated.
Can I tow up to 6000 lbs with a 2004 Monterey/Laguna ?
Thanks,
Darrell Terry

My 2004 Monterey Brochure says it is a 10,000 pound hitch.  I have the brochure as a .pdf and can send it to you via email if you would like.

I emailed the copy I have to the address for you in the Directory.   Look on page 23 in the right hand column.

Darrell,  The curb weight on the heaviest edge is only 4200 lb.

Darrell,

FWIW, we have been towing a 2007 Ford Edge behind our 04 Monterey for about 60,000 miles.  Nothing broke!  I concur that the car weighs about 4200 pounds.

Your GVWR is for a fully loaded Edge.  Hopefully you wouldn't be carrying 4 or more passengers in the car while towing it  :o , or say 600 lbs. of equivalent "stuff".  You could just run your Edge over a State highway or other commercial scales, loaded as it would be when towed, to define your actual towbar load.  That's more important, given it is lower than your 10,000lb coach tow capacity.

Our Monty Rae easily handles our 4300 lb Explorer, Pearl, via a Roadmaster Falcon All-terrain towbar.

Bill,
What brake system are you using on your Edge? I am partial to the M&G but based on their website they do not make a unit for the Edge.

Thanks in advance,

If I remember right, that's the one I wanted and couldn't have.  I compromised and got the air operated BrakeMaster from Roadmaster.  I have no idea if it pushes the pedal the right amount for all braking conditions.
