Kwikee step on 06 Patriot Thunder
« on: September 24, 2015, 02:17:47 PM »
yesterday our step stopped working not sure why but if we open the door nothing happens, I tried movement with the rocker switch and no change. So far I have not done any trouble shooting other then to look at the connections they appear OK. It was working fine but quit after a 2 mile drive on a rough gravel road.

Jerry,

Check the fuse in the front run box, could be that the drive down the road kicked up some gravel and disconnected the wires to the magnetic switch or the plug connections to the step controller. The wires to the magnetic switch are right in front of the Rt front tire and not well protected.

                 Hi Jerry,

Here is the color codes if you are checking the wiring. Caution: Be careful where your hands and fingers are in the event it opens or closes. The 4 wire plug: 10ga red is main 12volt power, yellow 14ga wire is ignition override (only powered with key on), white 14ga is the entry step switch, and the brown 14ga is the ground wire that tells the step to extend. Hope this helps. Regards, Fred

Thanks Fred, we just pulled into OK City and I ran jumpers to the motor direct, it dead looks like a new motor should fix it. I just need to find one Bill Sprague thinks its an auto window motor and was looking for some numbers.

Some old notes say it is a Siemens "Window Lift Motor", part number WL43003 used on a variety of Fords.

Hi Jerry,
I just had a similar issue with my step and trouble shot it down to the magnetic switch in the door jam. I replaced the mag switch and all works well again. I think I may have caused the problem when I attached a magnetic LED light to the step and it appeared to have screwed up the switch.

The wires' connections to those magnetic switches are a common problem, Dwight.  The steps are complicated by several controls, including door open or closed, engine ignition on or off, and the switch by the stairs.  Any of those factors get compromised and the step doesn't work as designed.  The door magnet switches' backsides and wires can be exposed to hazards and corrosion.  Jerry pretty much isolated his issue by cutting out the controller with direct application of 12 volts, with no motor response, letting off the hook anything else.

I have a new motor on the way to OK City as well as the controller I really can test this so I plan to replace it just in case the controller cause the motor to fail, I fig no reason to burn a new motor.
