Onan Generator Questions
« on: July 24, 2016, 10:38:53 PM »
Yesterday I was exercising the generator under load and after about an hour it shut off by itself. I was thinking it shut off due to the AGS setting. I restarted and it ran fine. Today I wondered why it would shut off so I was checking all the fluid levels.I was trying to figure out again why or if the AGS would shut it down.

I got a manual out and read thru it.

I could not see the coolant level.I looked in the manual I got at the recent maintenance session and it referenced "fault codes" I had not seen anything flashing yesterday so I pushed the start/stop buttony to try and display past codes as the book recommended. The first code displayed was 33 and then I pushed stop and it displayed 46 and then when stop was pushed again it quit flashing.

I read the 33 code as overheating so I have added some coolant. When I added about 16 oz of coolant the level came up to where I could see it. I started and ran the gen for a bit and checked again and the level was still ok but there was some blackish flakes or residue floating on the top of the coolant.I do park inside and i have no leaks under the coach.

I don't know what the code 46 is and it may have been a long time ago.

Does anyone have any knowledge or input on this matter. Any thoughts about what I should watch for if anything. We are getting ready to head out on an extended trip west.

I had the generator serviced in Dec 2014.It has 780 hours on it now.

I hope the info in this irv2 thread does not pertain to your Onan.

Dan,
Assuming that you do not have a coolant leak, you probably have a slipping fan belt that needs to be replaced.
