Onan 7500 QD 1000 hour service completed 1-24-2017
« on: January 24, 2017, 11:33:22 PM »
Well, Had the 2001 Contessa at Cummins Onan in Ocala for two days. 1000 hour 7500 qd generator service was done. Everything has been working fine up to the servicing.

After getting the generator removed from the coach and getting it safe for me to stay in the parking area with power and water they began taking it apart. Once opened up he first found a huge glob of magnetic fragments that had come off the rotor, not good. Further inspection found many of the copper coiling on the stator cut and mangled from the magnetic fragments. So the rotor they had but had to overnight the stator assembly. Stayed on the project and did everything else. Thankfully the radiator survived and everything else was ok too. Had the rotor and stator installed first thing today and did all the bench tests and load tests completed as needed. Pulled the coach up at 1115 am and had it installed and all the testing completed by 215 pm. I made it home before dark, I almost was going to try to do the work myself but wasn't up to it. $2810 later and its a wrap once again.

LaMonte - a year ago while doing a normal service the inexperienced tech found a glob of magnetic debris on the inside frame of our 7500 QD  generator. He had no idea where it came from. Due to lack of time he completed the PM, I kept the debris for future reference & we went on our way. Some 100 hours of runtime later the genny is still running strong. I guess when we get back home from our winter travel, when I have the time I should dig into it & see what I need to replace? Thanks for the update!

The technician told me about an issue with the glue they used during the time-frame of 1998-2002 had some issues with allowing the magnets to pull loose over time. He said many didn't have problems but some did.

Of course today they use an entirely different and stronger adhesive glue for assembling the magnets onto the rotor. Of course the stator took a lot of punishment from the loose magnet fragments. It was a clump about the size of a 50 cent piece. Generator is now putting out about 8kw of power as its about new again.

I posted this mainly for info to help someone else out! I had no issues with the generator prior to taking it in for the 1000 hour service......
