Today the frequency of the chime for our left/right signal increased noticeably. Signal lights are functioning properly. Is this an indication of something or were they just overly energetic today?

On newer cars its an indication that a bulb is out. Might try replacing the flasher, if all bulbs are ok.

I was wondering if it was an indicator of something actually wrong or about to go wrong.

Jeff,
The frequency of the flasher is dependent on the resistance of the bulbs. The resistance has apparently changed so checking the bulbs and connection will probably ID the problem.
