Gas Props for cargo doors

(1/2) > >>

David Ciotti:
The cargo doors on my 2002 Marquis Jasper don't stay open once lifted.  Where can I find the proper capacity gas props for the cargo doors.  Some have 100lb models some 40lb and some have 60lb ones.  Should I put higher capacity devices than what came with the coach?

Bill Lampkin:
I replaced mine last year. Took the numbers off the old struts, that's all the vendor needed.

Gerald Farris:
David,
The 2002 Marquis has different design bay doors from one side to the other, and that is probable accounting for your different capacity struts. Normally, it is not a good idea to increase the capacity of your gas struts when replacing them because the higher capacity will over stress the mounts. Your struts are just worn out, which is very normal on an 18 year old coach, so replace them with like rated capacity and size. The problem arises when you get a used coach that has had some of the struts replaced with the wrong struts, All doors of the same size and hinge design should have the same strut.

I’ve used RockAuto for replacement car struts before, but they may not have the correct brand model numbers for you since your application is different.  They sort them by range of length if you try searching there.  Monroe is a common quality brand there.   https://www.rockauto.com/en/tools/body,universal+lift+support,15%22-19%22+extended+length,1001339

To look elsewhere you should enter “support lifts” in your search engine field.  You’ll have better luck than with the term “strut”.  There are lots of suppliers to choose from, including here:   https://www.liftsupportsdepot.com/products/lift-supports-depot-lift-supports/       Stabilus I think is a good brand.

David Ciotti:
The problem I am having is the struts were replaced but not with the exact same strengths.  One door has 4 40lb struts and they are way too weak.  The door does not stay open and slams shut.  Another door has 2 40s and 2 60s and it is almost the right amount of lift.  The door opens and stays open but it is hard to lift.

I think I will order 4 60lb units and see what happens.

Thanks for all the information guys.
