Burping cooling system
« on: November 20, 2021, 06:36:17 PM »
Just finished changing all the hoses, but the top radiator hose. Not sure how to get to it. Do I need to run the engine until the thermostat opens up to burp the system? It will take forever in this cold weather.
Thanks

You don't need to do anything special to purge the air out after replacing coolant. Just run the engine at high idle for a minute.

However at some point you will want to get the engine fully warmed up and cooled down (a cycle) so you can verify the coolant in the surge tank remains at the correct level.

Here's the paragraph from the C9 Operations and Maintenance Manual:

Fill

1.  Fill the cooling system with coolant/antifreeze. Refer to this Operation and Maintenance
Manual, “Fluid Recommendations” for more information on cooling system specifications. Refer to
this Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Refill Capacities” for more information on the capacity of
the cooling system. Do not install the cooling system filler cap.
2.  Start and run the engine at low idle. Increase the engine rpm to 1500 rpm. Run the engine at
high idle for 1 minute in order to purge the air from the cavities of the engine block. Stop the
engine.
3.  Check the coolant level. Maintain the coolant level within 13 mm  (0.5 inch) below the bottom
of the pipe for filling. Maintain the coolant level within 13 mm (0.5 inch) to the proper level on
the sight glass (if equipped).
