Scan Gauge D and older motorhomes
« on: March 08, 2016, 01:49:15 AM »
Does anybody know if my Cat 3176 will be compatible with Scan Gauge D. I'm hoping to add one if compatible. My manuals show a 9-pin Engine Data Link connector on the engine, so it may be a possibility. SG website shows 1995-1996 vehicles and newer only, but says some vehicles had the required connectors earlier.

So, who has put one on there old bus ?

If your engine has an ECM, it should work, I would think?

Dale, it is unlikly that you can read the ECM on a Cat 3176 engine reguardless of what
information is telling you. You mentioned you have a 9 pin which is a J-1939 data link
Connector. The Cat 3176 engine has a 6 pin J-1708 data link connector built in early
and mid 90's. Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic

According to Scan gauge website, there unit hooks up to either 6 or 9 pin data link, same type connector you mentioned Dave.

Dale that is great, kinda like the silver leaf or the Aladdin scan gauge many people
are installing. Going back to the connector new engines the 9 pin J-1939 is alone
a separate data link connector and the 6 pin J-1708 is also a separate data link connector.
Reason for the 2 different data link adapters again, Cat on early engines used a 32 bit
ECM for earlier engines and under 400 hp. The later engines have a 64 bit ECM. What
I have found with Cat ET connection to engines most all the engines have the 6 pin
J-1708 connection. Going with same thought most Cummins engines (earlier engines)
have the 6 pin connection with Cummins Insite. This is about all I can relate to you
about this, do your home work. Been using Diagnostic equipment for a real long time
and again do your home work to meet your needs. Dave Atherton Retired Cat Mechanic

guys.... scanguage d question:  how do you overcome the part where the port is in the back of the motorhome? is the diagnostic port duplicated under the dash near the "Cockpit"?

In theory, all the dash gauges are getting the info from back there, so there should be a way.  My bus is in winter storage for another couple weeks, then the projects start.
