Caterpillar Regeneration System - DPF Dash Light is on
« on: May 07, 2018, 01:32:01 PM »
We had our coach completely serviced on Monday at a Caterpillar authorized service center.  After being on the road a couple of days the DPF  light on the instrument panel came on.  What do we need to do to solve this issue?

Second problem:

The check engine, the ATC, and ABS light comes on quite often.  We talked too what is left of Beaver service in Indiana and they have no clue what is causing this problem.

We appreciate any help you may be able to provide us.

Thank you

Ken , not knowing engine your running but assume it is a Cat C-9S 425 hp.  Most problems
are common in the rengeration systems . First question did The service shop check the DPF
Filter this is the first place that would trigger the engine light ( restriction on inlet of filter ).
Next on the DPF filter canister there is a sensor on the inlet end on and sensor on the exhaust
end on top of canister. Third there is a sensor up on top by exhaust connection ( one of the three sensors could be causing the engine light, mainly failed to regn cycle. Last there could be a possible
crack in the ARD on top that has you spark plug to light the regeneration. This is a very common
problem with the ARD head and many have been replaced because cracking. Sounds what you have happening the regeneration system has failed to light.

To answer your other question on ABS and ATC , in most cases sensor on wheel triggering lamp to
Come on if not the sensor it could be possible wheel bearing end play just at certain times will
Trigger lamp ( many times with ABS system if work is performed and wheel removed the bearing end
Play is over looked. The correct setting and checking wheel with dial indicator Is .003 to .005 max.

Ken, I have that engine in my 08 Contessa. My ABS light comes on now and then. Beaver Coach told me to pretty much ignore it and it would eventually correct itself and go off. It does. I am learning to live with my C9s. Getting used to the regen light and occasional yellow Check Engine ligjt. On 2 different occasions I've had Petersen Cat run diagnostics when it came on. Once in Redmond, Oregon and once in Redding, Calif. Both times I was told that unless it's red it's most likely minor and just keep going. I follow the book on operation and maintenance religiously.   The potential event is recorded and can be called up at a service center at your convenience. I've  read everything I can find on the engine and always stay at the Cat shop when service is performed so I can converse with the tech.  On one occasion the code indicated a need for a new turbo, which is quite common with these engines. The Cat service guy said there was absolutely not one thing wrong with my turbo, reset the indicators and it's not been a problem. May crap out tomorrow but been fine for the last 3,000 miles. Hang in there.

I had it recharged at a Cat dealer and now the problem went away.

Thank you
