Window sealed with tar
« on: May 06, 2019, 07:38:12 PM »
The window frame on our entry door is sealed in the door panel by a black tar-like material. In the hot sun it sags out from behind the window frame and looks crappy. Since this is what your eye is drawn to as you get close to the coach it has bugged me since we’v Owned it.

I’ve tried cutting off the drips, and over time it just fills bask in. I’m afraid at some point it will cease to keep water out. All our other windows are sealed with a normal flexible caulking. I’m inclined to pull the window out, get rid of the tar and reinstall with caulking. But before I proceed, I’d like to know more about this situation. Is this ‘original equipment’?  Is there something going on with this particular window that would warrant this method of sealing it? Any light you folks can shed would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Will,
Your window seal is not original. My window is surrounded by a rubber seal. See photo.

Will, we had our window replaced due to fogging in 2009. Peninsula Glass Vancouver, Washington use a black window sealer that resembles silicone. FYI

Thanks guys.  I’ll pull it out and re-seat it with a legit sealant.
