bedroom slide brake issue
« on: May 11, 2014, 04:30:11 PM »
Help!  My bedroom slide will not operate with the electric brake in place.  The brake is a Stearns B130 OBJY2 and I have removed it and need to know if I can drive the coach with the brake removed and what are the consequences.  I was not able to locate Ed Bukers post where he shows the brake and explains the cleaning process.  We are scheduled to drive the coach tomorrow and I would like to know what to expect if I do.

Paul,
The slide motor brake is what holds the slide in place while driving. Therefore driving the coach with the brake removed will allow the slide to fully extend, especially if you turn a corner to the right. This can be very dangerous.

Paul,
Best approach is to bring slide in and then reattach the brake to hold the slide in place.
The brake needs a full 12v+ to operate and the wiring from the switch  the slide mechanism has a number of connections that can offer resistance. Try the slide after the generator runs a bit to ensure a full 12v. Also check the connections, especially at the slide switch. If wired like my 01 Contessa, the wire awg from the slide circuit is reduced at the switch pigtail. Also try un/re-plugging the connector on the switch itself as it can give you a poor connection.
If you want a block diagram of the wiring circuit let me know,

Paul,
Here is the post that Ed describes his slide brake repair in.

Gerald,  Thanks for that info.

Steve, The wiring at the slide switch on the wall has all large gauge wires to it.  They seem to be the same gauge as the wires coming from under the bed and all of the connections are clean w/o any sign of corrosion.  I was foolish when I removed the brake and did not mark the wires so now I don't know for sure if polarity is important.  I have tried it both ways and still no luck.  I tried touching the 2 brake wires to a good 12V battery and either way the brake clicks and there is some resistance measured across the 2 leads to the brake so I think it is not blown.

If you could send me the wiring diagram it may help.  At this point I am stumped.  I have looked online for a new motor and the only one that I saw with the same B130 OBJY2 numbers shows a different bolt pattern.  Any thoughts?

Paul,
Email sent.  If the brake clicks with battery 12V applied and not when the switch is applied it appears to be a voltage problem. See if you can measure voltage at brake when switch is engaged. As you'll see by the diagram, both voltage & ground are switched to get the motor to run forward and reverse.

OK, all is good again!

When I read Ed's post I realized that I did not have any of the corrosion he had.  The key for me was when Ed said "When you hit the switch it is built to release on power and lock with power off". I checked it with power applied and sure enough the brake was released.  This made it a voltage issue as Steve said.  I fiddled with the small wires to the brake where they are connected to the 12V supply for the slide motor and sure enough one of them has poor connection.  I repaired the connection and the slide now opereates as good as ever.

Thanks again to Gerald, Steve and also Ed for a very informative post.
