Trans fluid question. Allison 6000
« on: November 09, 2019, 07:10:30 PM »
Went to move my coach to the shop today and apparently I've developed a leak as the dip stick is at the tip while running. Any idea approx how many quarts/gallons I'll need to top it off. Also do I fill thru the same hole that the dip stick goes in? I was planning to have the shop drain and fill, so I really only need enough to get it approx 5 miles.

Thanks again,

Tim and Ann

Tim, there's no way for anyone here to tell how much fluid you need to add. But if you have the transmission shift pad with the "up/down" arrows (not the shifter Lever style) you can electronically check the fluid level.
I think you have the Allison model 3060 transmission.
Yes, you add the fluid through the dipstick tube.
Here's the procedure:

I was pretty sure that my list of specs said Allison World 6000, I could be wrong tho.  I will check the control panel and see if it can give me a better idea of how low it is.  Hopefully it's not to low for it to check.

Thanks!

Tim, You probably have a 3K series trans as Mike states, the biggest one Allison uses in a motorhome is a 4K model.

Any idea if I can just use cheap off the shelf ATF from Walmart/Oreillys in order to drive it the 5+ miles to the repair shop?  They want me to move it tomorrow so they can lay down gravel so I don't have time to order it or drive 100+ miles to get to a bigger city to get the name brand stuff.

Thanks,

Tim,
As long as the fluid meets Allison TES 295 or 468 specs you are OK. It's not clear if your tranny has a Transynd fluid or not. In any case, IMHO it would pay to switch to Transynd following the repair..

Tim,
If you are going to drain and refill the transmission, and you just need to add a gallon or so of fluid to drive the coach to a shop, any Dexron III transmission fluid will work. But if you are only a gallon low, a short drive to the shop will not cause any problems. Transmission dip sticks on these coaches are not always accurate, so that is the reason that I recommend checking the transmission fluid level with the shift pad on a regular basis (at least monthly). However, like Steve said, I strongly recommend using TranSynd or an equivalent fluid when you service the transmission (drain, change filters, and refill).
