Help! We are stuck in Orick CA with brakes dragging!!
« on: January 12, 2020, 12:46:18 AM »
We are on our way to the Quartzsite rally when we broke down (brakes are dragging and smoking)!  Roadside assistance hasn't found anybody within 200 miles to help us.  Any suggestions?

You may have to be hauled inland to Redding where there are more qualified service providers.

If you could get trucked to Grants Pass, there’s Henderson’s, a BAC sponsor and arguably the best chassis place in the country (and no tax).  It should be about 122 miles.

But bad timing... heavy weather is approaching.  You may be forced to lay low for awhile, whether in Orick or Grants Pass.  And they, like most, won’t be open until Monday morning.  But if you could get hauled there tomorrow, I’m sure they’d try to work you in given the situation.  They are good people.

Isnt this an air over hydraulic system?.
If so have you checked the master cylinder?  Our 98 Pat had one in the front cap below the windshield.  I believe it takes DOT3.  Is the air assist leaking?

Lonne,
There is a Cummings West facility in Arcata, just south of you. Redding has CAT, Cummings and Freightliner facilities.
This might help ID other facilities that I missed.  http://www.rvservicereviews.com/StateList.asp?Submit=&sortby=location&state=CA&search=&CategoryID=&ZipCode=&Miles=&SearchState=&KeywordState=

Lonne,
In case Gerald didn't get ahold of you, he thinks there are 3 possible causes to the problem based on the age of your coach;
  • The hydraulic hoses to the calipers can break down internally and effectively create a check valve situation.
  • The slides were not cleaned and lubed properly resulting in binding.
  • The caliper pistons have rusted preventing free movement.
