Marquis high gloss wood finish
« on: February 27, 2025, 07:27:56 PM »
I'm making a new cabinet door for a marquis. Does anyone know how to get that high gloss finish on berry as used on a marquis?

Bill,
Beaver used a lacquer (7 coats) to achieve the  high gloss. That's the good news. The bad news is that it tended to absorb moisture resulting in the milky finish endemic to  Marquis of that era. If you haven't do a search for "milky" here and you'll find quite a bit of background on the issue.

Bill
There is an article in coach assist under common problems about that finish.
You may also want to do a forum search on it , there have been some discussions on how to repair the veneer door fronts.

We own a custom woodworking business and do very high end stuff.

It is pretty easy to reproduce the gloss finishes on our Beavers.

Lacquer is one choice.  Get DEFT lacquer in a spray can.
Sand with 800 grit between light coats.  Build it up.

Better choice is actually a polyurethane.  Gloss.  Same look.  800 grit between coats.

Best choice would be a catalyzed conversion varnish.

I used 8 coats of Watco spray (rattle can) lacquer. sanded with 320 before last coat. Have heard that buffing with a paper bag will bring out the gloss. Whaddya think?
