Dash fan stuck on defrost vent .. UPDATE
« on: December 25, 2009, 06:00:38 AM »
No matter where I move the selector switch the air blows only thru the defroster vents. Have tried numerous times in ALL selections with fan on High, Med and Low and heat selector in various areas. It just recently happened .... no maintenance work has been done in the dash area to disrupt any wiring etc. This system might be vac ... is there a reservoir maybe? I did replace the resister in the plenum last year ... could something be near the plenum? Our Class A is a 06 Beaver 39' 400 cat. Any thoughts ????? Thanks. Tom
Just received a call from the Ford dealer. $325.00 for a new part!!!! Anyone know of a less expensive parts supplier????

Tom, It has been my experence that it will go to defrost only when you have a vacumn leak. Check the vacumn hose connection at the back of the heater control. Also follow the hoses to the control valves as best you can. Good luck.

Diesel engines do not supply vacuum like a gasoline engine does so you probably have a firewall mounted vacuum pump that supplies the vacuum to operate the doors that controls the air flow in your dash AC/heat/defrost vents. Make sure it is operating and supplying vacuum and the hoses are securely connected.

I looked under the dash (best I could .... wish I was a pretzel) and thru the dash access opening and everything seems OK. Slid out the generator to see if I could see anything on the firewall. NOT!!! Before I crawl under the front end (always Apprehensive doing that) Does anyone know if that's where the pump and reservoir are ???

You probably do not have a reservoir, only an electrically powered vacuum pump. The pump will be mounted on the firewall close to the A/C evaporator case.

Is it the size of a cereal box or pack of cigarettes?

Our old one was about 1 inch by 5 and was air operated. New one is electric and about the 2 inches by 5. Both use 1/4 inch vacuum hose and goes to a vacuum storage sphere about the size of a grapefruit. The hose then goes to a distribution manifold with small multi colored plastic tubes which is under the dash and interacts with the selector dial for AC, Def, Heat and so on.

OK so I spent an hour and a half on my back! Everything seemed secure under the dash. (I also found the schematic hard copy in my file ... to understand how wires/tubing connect) ... On my back on the asphalt ..... all the tubing, sphere and whatever components are far outta reach !!! I shined my high power flash light with and without the generator in it's place. Unless I find Popeye's girlfriend "Olive oil" .... I have no clue how to get up to the vacuum components !! I wasn't able to touch anything up on the firewall. Didn't see anything loose or hanging. Any suggestions???

PROJECT UPDATE
Propped myself up under the coach to be able to reach the vac pump. Pulled the 2 wires off the pump and tested with my light tester ... terminals lit up. Pump no worky !! Snipped all the zip ties, dropped the pump and discovered it's a "Ford" product. Called a Scottsdale parts dealer, gave them the number and they'll call me back tomorrow on availability.
