Dennis,
That is strange Dish would not sell you a receiver. They were more than glad to sell me one. You can buy a Dish receiver at Good Sam, and BTW, they are cheaper at Good Sam. Day late and a dollar short for me on that one.

I fully understand and wrestle with the expense side myself. It is not a very full well of $ for a lot of us all the time. I have been eyeing a 46 inch Samsung for a year and have not pulled the trigger myself. Hope you find some short term and long term solutions that work for you.

Well in 30-45days im likely going out of country for 6months or so ona job, so blowing 3-4k to get the latest satelite system on the roof is plain silly. so ill probably not do anything until the next time im in the states for a longer period. we have netflix on the tv cause it has smart features so we can watch stuff and amazon prime also. but sometimes you just wanna watch the normal shows on at night. and the local over the air channels are terrible even with the new Jack antenna. (we are at the end of the coverage area for Over the Air)

Update, we bought a winegard carryout and Dish pay as you go, hooked up worked great and got the dish for 545$ new and 89$ receiver.
