Shocks

I was just considering upgrading my Bilstein shocks to Koni's when I discovered that I have Monroe's on my 2007 Beaver Contessa. My Contessa has 38,000 miles and I am wondering what mileage I should get out of the Monroe's. Secondly, I know everyone with Koni's are very happy. Does anyone have any experience with the new Bilsteins introduced late last summer? I am hearing good things about them also. Lastly, the Koni's are almost double the cost of the new Bilstein model.

Anyone have any thoughts

Ken,
If you have a shock that is leaking, it is bad and needs to be replaced. Otherwise replacing shocks is not advised on an age or mileage basis, but should only be replaced to correct a problem with ride or handling.

My 2000 Marquis still has the original Bilstein shocks with no problems at 95,000 miles. If you are having a problem with your shocks, you may need to replace them, but consider only replacing the 4 (front or rear) that seam to be giving you the problem. As for what to install, let you wallet be the guide, they are all good just some are a little better.

Thanks Gerald. I hadn't thought of replacing just the front. Thats where we are experiencing a little porpoising and some rough ride on rough roads. At least its more noticeable since they were new 38,000 miles ago.I have no idea whats going on in the back as its 30' away. There is no leaking but I am hearing reports of problems with the Monroe's that other RVers are having starting around 30,000 miles. Gues thats why they are $30 and not $100. You get what you pay for (or what Monaco installs). Since we will be keeping the coach longterm and will replace the Monroe's eventually, thought I'd do so now and enjoy the ride a few years early.

ps. Thanks again for your help with my Allison filter change. Its all topped off and working like a charm.

We thought we had Monroes on our 06 Monterey, since there was a time period where the factory switched brands, but the techs at Bend found some shock mounting issues were the real culprit behind our vibrations, and we in fact had Bilsteins - without a closeup look, the two brands appear the same color.

Some Goodyear tires were mismounted on coaches at the Monaco factory, which caused symptoms identical to an out-of-round condition.  Thinking that was also part of our issue, we took the coach to Goodyear who determined the tires were mounted correctly, but Les Schwab in Redmond had improperly balanced both front wheel/tires.  Goodyear's higher-tech balancer helped restore the ride an 11000 mile coach should have.

Prior to this, we struggled with switching to spendy Kuni shocks, since we thought we had Monroes and wanted to get either Bilsteins or Kunis to correct our vibration problem;  but now our current Bilstein ride is fine, so we'll stick with them.  In the interim we'd been advised Kunis were slightly better than Bilsteins, depending on who you talked to.  But some said the difference wasn't worth the cost of changing, esp. after we found out we didn't have Monroes to begin with.

I guess the point is that ride problems should not be too quickly ascribed to shocks, though your porpoising is not a hard diagnosis.

I am not experiencing any specific problems as of now. Balancing and alignment all good. The tires have been trued courtesy of Goodyear. From several sources I have learned I am near the end of useful service on the Original Monroe's (and given the ride I am inclined to believe that). Therefore I am looking to upgrade and improve ride and performance. Going from Monroe to either Bilstein or Koni's will be a much needed improvement.

The issue is $1556 for 8 Koni's installed or $847 for 8 Bilsteins installed. Just trying to figure out whether the more expensive Koni's are that much better of a ride/performance to justify the increased cost.

So far, no one has been able to answer that question as the new Bilsteins are just getting out on the market. I know everyone loves their Koni's.

Ken-

Here's a link to a relevant discussion last year on the Open Roads Forum: http://www.rv.net/cforum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/22637257/srt/pa/pging/1/page/1.cfm

I didn't read through the entire thread, so can't say if the newer Bilsteins are discussed.  But you may find helpful info anyway.
