Jake Brake Downshift

Greetings All,

My last trip from Medford to Bend was on hwy 138 north of Crater lake.  Near the 5000 foot level snow began falling and accumulating on the windshield.  The inside windshield started to fog, so I was searching for the defroster setting.  As I crested the grade speed picked up, and the speedometer was 68 and climbing, as the road started winding down the mountain.  I switched on the Jake brake and heard the throaty roar from the Aero turbo muffler.  However, the transmission is programmed to seek 4th gear.  It remained in 6th gear, because the RPMs were too high for a lower gear.  After applying the foot brake, and reducing the speed somewhat, the transmission shifted to 5th gear, and then to 4th.  I was delighted the on-board computers were smarter than I.  I had enough to occupy my feeble mind without thinking where the down shift arrow on the dash was located, and try to punch it.  Apparently, on my coach, the computers will not allow downshifts if it will create an unsafe condition for the CAT engine.
This experience may give some information to consider before deciding to reprogram your transmission to seek 6th gear when the Jake brake is engaged.  In my opinion safety trumps convenience.
You may have noted, I said on my " last trip".  This trip was to put our beloved Beaver Marquis for sale at Beaver Coach Sales in Bend, Oregon.  It is in beautiful condition, and everything works.  After 44 years of RVing and 18 years as a member of the Beaver family Carolyn and I are retiring from the RV life.
We wish you all great ventures.

Until I had the transmission reprogrammed, when I engaged the Jake Brake while in 6th gear it would not drop to 5th gear - it would slam into 4th gear.  The engine RPMs would go as high as 2300 PLUS from about 1500/1600 - and this shift change happened in about 1/2 second.  I rather like my Jake Brake programming now.  The transmission does not change gears now when I engage the Jake Brake.  As I slow down the transmission shifts to lower gears in an orderly fashion WITHOUT placing the engine or transmission under stress.  I generally do not have the Jake Brake on while cruising.  I will turn it on in preparation when I know I need to slow down, or when going down a hill where I want it to hold back from increasing speed to quickly.  Much of the time I drive with my left hand near the Jake Brake toggle switch.  It's a comfortable position for me.

Incidentally, I doubt I would ever being going near 68 mph in a snow storm.  At least, my partner says if I was going that fast, then the noise from the right seat would be overwhelming.   lol

Larry N Carolyn - Have a great time in the next chapter of your life.

Larry and Carolyn,
Vicki and I wish you the best and hope you really enjoy your life in Medford.

For others, I am not sure I would be using a  jake brake in snow, especially if there was any on the road.  A slick road is not a place where you want something slowing you when you least expect it.  It could cause quite a skid problem on a slick road.  I don't even use mine on wet roads.

Larry, thank you for this post and I know this is late and you probably won't see this but if someone does and passes this on I really appreciate how well you took care this coach!  Yes, my wife and I bought your coach at Beaver coach sales in Bend back in April and absolutely love this thing.  I've been known to go overkill on things and this fits the bill very well and it's good to know about the jake.
