Dometic Refrigerator Door Gaskets
« on: June 17, 2014, 01:37:29 AM »
Hi All,
Ok we seem to have the fridge working well once again.  We put the two working front jacks up as high as they would go to bring the coach as close to level as we could and installed a new thermistor and our temps are back where they need to be.  We could not get an appointment at camping world to have it looked over but asked about replacement gaskets and were told we needed a whole new door!  Does anyone know where to get gaskets?  I have looked at the parts manual and there is no part number for the gaskets.  I did the gasket test as Joel suggested and ours are leaking a bit.
Thanks,
Laura

You got lucky.  Being more than 6% off level for an hour or more usually is death to these critters.

Check your model fridge at Dometic.com parts, or you could see if Beaver Coach Service has the gaskets and/or advice thereof for your model 1492 (I think you said?) on hand;  it seems to me to be a common model among our rigs.

But it would be important to me to make absolutely certain the issue isn't with door alignment first... been there, done that more than once.  No point paying for a new gasket that's not gonna fix the problem.  Adding secondary weatherstripping isn't a permanent repair, and may in fact interfere with actual proper fit.  Some sort of stress like someone leaning on an open door or other inadvertent event can easily distort it.  Carefully eyeballing it and judiciously manhandling it back into some semblance of square has worked for me in the past, but it could also be that one or more of the hinges are loose or perhaps just worn.

Joel,
I was going to have Larry look at the doors...I think they are out of alignment.  The gap at the bottom is much larger than the gap at the top.

I am also going to try the Vaseline trick to see if it helps.  I agree the weatherstripping was not a good idea.  It seemed to make things worse.

We were lucky that the fridge still works.  I was sure it was dead when it had a total melt down!
