Shoreline Cord Reels

Hi Everybody,  I have a question about Shoreline Cord Reels.  I've gone through 2 of them since I've owned my rig.  They eventually lose one leg of the 240volts.  They use brushes on metal rings for the contacts.  They fail when lest expected.  Is it just me or is that a bad design?  I put in a 240volt receptacle in direct connect box for now.  But I don't like lifting that 50 amp cord around.

Is there anything better out there yet?  I see the Glendenning(?) for RV and marine that coils the cord instead of using contacts.  But they are pretty pricy.  Anything else out there?

So far we've had no trouble with our reel.  If it fails I'll replace it; I don't want to lug the heavy cord.

New ones are spendy, I agree, but ours works pretty well as long as I keep the cord clean upon retraction by holding a shop towel around it.  At least you'd be rid of the ring problem.

You might shop around online for a better RLC price, though I didn't see much.  You could call local RV dealers and BCS to see if they can do better than Glenndenning direct, and maybe save shipping by you picking it up yourself;  that's unlikely but worth a shot.

In addition to doing what Joel suggests, I also make sure that all the cord has been dragged back to just under the location of the reel.  Furthermore, I also provide it some support with my hand as I retract it.  That way the reel isn't lifting and dragging all that much weight.

Replaced ours in September $600 new free shipping (eBay), used was $500.00 plus freight. 10 years is not bad for those contacts. It's just remembering to have all power (air cond's, hydro hot elect, etc) off before connecting and disconnecting from shore power.
