Replacing backup camera
« on: August 10, 2017, 12:03:51 AM »
The previous owner of our '05 PT had the backup camera replaced with a wireless system.  It now works sporadically, and I have been unsuccessful correcting the problem.  I am very uncomfortable driving with the backup camera screen blank about half the time.  so, I am going to take the system back to a wired setup.  I have confirmed that the original system is still functional.  I bought a $15 camera and hooked it to the wiring in the rear of the coach and everything worked as it should. Because the conversion to wireless process fiber-glassed over the original camera port I figure the easiest path is to mount the new camera on the exterior where the wireless camera is now.  I spoke to Mark at RV.cams, who was very helpful.  His best solution is to use a Voyager VCMS155 camera.  It can be connected to the original system with the aid a a couple of adapters.  Cost will be about $250.

Has anyone else used this camera?  And, I don't mean to sound cheap, but, is there a good solution that is cheaper?

Bill,
Haven't had experience with either but there are certainly less expensive units on the market. This Pyle weatherproof unit (PLCMTR) from Walmart is an example. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pyle-Weatherproof-Rearview-Backup-Safety-Driving-Camera/47471410?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227034930306&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=67023173449&wl4=pla-150234497089&wl5=9030068&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=47471410&wl13=&veh=sem It has a CMD sensor, which is a bit better than standard CMOS. At it's price, you may want to try it and if it doesn't work out, switch to the Voyager or similar model. looks like it has the same mounting and hook-up as the Voyager.
