Left front wheel leaking bearing oil
« on: September 09, 2017, 01:33:04 PM »
Well, we were told to evacuate yesterday, loaded the DP and headed North on US 19. It took us from 11 am to 5 pm to go 73 miles.

Mostly bumper to bumper traffic.

When we arrived in Chiefland traffic stopped completely and we went less than 2 miles in 1 hour.

Stopped at Chiefland and found the left front wheel starting to leak oil from bearing cap and ABS light came on. Think the brake has oil on it now. Decided to make a uturn and drive home....

no vehicles heading South so home in less than 2 hours safely. They are saying up to 80 mph winds 4 am Monday now where we are.

We are in a manufactured home. If the winds are no worse we should be ok, been here during others that much wind!

Lamonte,
There are several questions that you need to answer to enable us to answer your question. What type of front bearing lubrication do y ou have, packed bearings or oil bath? Where is the grease leaking from? Was the brake overheated?

Without any more information, it sounds like you had an overheated brake that burned the ABS sensor, and caused oil expansion so that oil leaked out the rubber plug in the center of your hub cover. If only the inner hub seal is leaking and getting oil on the inside of the tire and on the brakes, that should not turn on the ABS light. If only the hub cover is leaking on the outside of the tire, this will not get oil on the brakes or turn on the ABS light.

When we left yesterday the left brake seemed odd to me like it was sticking partly on. Traffic was terrible and lots of stop and go to get out of Florida. We decided to go back home after 73 miles. The wheel bearing is oil bath, and has leaked all down the tire on the front. The plastic housing where you check the level for the oil has one side that is not flush and is sticking out. That's where the oil has leaked out. We parked the RV back at home and left to go to sister in laws house in Crystal River, Fl. to stay and ride out the hurricane. so we will be waiting a bit before I can get a good look at it.

Lamonte,
Your second description verifies my first impression. You have an overheated brake.

Thanks Gerald. After this hurricane gets by and we evaluate the damage, I will decide what and if or how it will be dealt with. Thanks for your insight.
