Looking for an RV Park Suggestion around Sedona, AZ
« on: March 23, 2016, 02:37:09 AM »
We are done with Phoenix at the end of March and are working our way north. I am tired of sand and cactus and want some red rock! In our search for the eternal springtime, I would like to move north (and higher) to Sedona for about a week or so. Flagstaff is still too cold at night for my sweetie. Any prior experience on parking a Big Beaver (45 foot Marquis) in the area?

Bruce,
I would highly recommend Distant Drums RV park. http://ddrvresort.com/
It is about 25 miles south of Sedona city center but the attractions and things to do within a few miles of the park make it worth the extra miles to Sedona proper. The park is new and very modern and clean with concrete pads, grass and paved roads. Views from some sites are great. It is across the intestate from Cliff Castle Casino but you don't hear any traffic. Nearby attractions include native american sites Montezumas's Castle, Mortezuma's Well and Tuzigoot. If you like animals, Out of Africa is less than 5 miles. You can get up close and personal with lions, hyenas, etc.. For shopping , Jerome is not to be missed. an old mining town clinging  to the side of Mingus Mtn, it has many unique shops, etc. Old Town Cottonwood has a couple of excellent and reasonable priced resturants. IMHO "Nics" is a must (reservations recommended on weekends). If you want lay back and do some fishing, Deadhorse State Park has a number of good spots. They also  offer RV camping on a first come basis. They have 50 A but you need to use the common dump station and  I think stays are limited to about a week.  We visit Distant Drums for weekends a couple times a year and never tire of the area.
In any case, Enjoy!

Thanks Steve,
My primary resource tends to be rvparkreviews, but I have lowered my expectations based on some of the parks I have stayed at following the recommendations.
I am concerned about a lot of the parks being able to support 45 feet of MH, she is very liveable but a bit unwieldy when it comes to finding a place to sit.
I'm kind of surprised that we don't have a separate subforum for Places to Stay given the trust we put in each other over many other matters.
I'll check out Distant Drums.

I'll second Distant Drums...great park with spacious pads.  However some sites are very un-level and may cause issues.  Mine was OK but I saw some MH's with lots of wood blocks under the tires.  Best bet would be to discuss this with the office.

We stayed at the Sedona Elks for a couple days. Power and water were available for about $25 per nite. Beer was cheap and people were friendly. On the Airport Rd right off the main Highway 97 I think. Had a great view and really close to everything. There was plenty of room.

Rancho Sedona RV Park - right in downtown Sedona and on Oak Creek.  Pricey but well located.  Our 42' Beaver fit nicely in one of the river spots.  BEWARE of parking under some trees as there was a bird poop issue in the past.

I've tried getting into this on for 2 year but there were limited spaces for my rig.  I was advised to make my reservation a year in advance.

We stayed at Deadhorse State Park. Short drive to Sedona.  https://azstateparks.itinio.com/deadhorseranch/  You will still need reservations.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Distant Drums was full and there were complications with other nearby parks, many of which were a simple patch of desert with little of interest, so we are going to Zane Grey RV Park in Camp Verde. It's a bit out of the way from Sedona but close enough to manage the drive to area attractions and hopefully a nice venue.
We'll let you know how the park suits a Beaver.

Just an update. Attached are some pictures of the Big Girl nestled into her slot at Zane Grey RV Park. Nice to have trees for a change. The park is nestled next to West Clear Creek so the water course maintains a nice mix of shade trees, along with a trail to walk the dog off leash. No problem with space width or length for 45', very level, and access wasn't difficult, not spacious roads but we've done much worse. The owner "assisted" us in parking and seemed a bit put off that I wasn't willing to take direction from anyone other than my sweetie when it comes to wiggling into our space.  This is a +55 park but it is all RV's so the neighbors have a similar experience base, unlike the park model parks. I can definitely recommend this park if you are tired of the "patch of desert" experience. We are off to Grand Canyon mid-month and then on to Zion as we work our way North. 8)
